General description

The school librarian/media specialist will be responsible for leading and managing the school's library and media center, fostering a vibrant learning environment that supports both traditional literacy and the development of 21st-century skills, including robust STEM education. This includes curating resources, providing instruction, collaborating with teachers, and facilitating student learning across all subject areas, with a particular focus on integrating technology and STEM concepts.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Curate and Manage the Library Collection:
    • Develop and maintain a diverse collection of print, non-print, and digital resources that support the curriculum and interests of all students, including a focus on STEM-related materials.
    • Evaluate and select new resources, emphasizing those that promote inquiry, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills in STEM fields.
    • Ensure equitable access to resources and information for all learners, considering diverse learning styles and needs.
    • Oversee the circulation of library materials, maintaining an organized and accessible catalog system.


  • Provide Instruction and Support for Information and Digital Literacy:
    • Design and deliver engaging lessons and workshops on information literacy skills, including researching, evaluating, and citing sources, with a strong emphasis on locating and utilizing STEM information.
    • Facilitate instruction on the ethical use of information, digital citizenship, and online safety.
    • Teach students how to effectively use various technologies, including online databases, educational software, and emerging tools relevant to STEM learning.
    • Guide students in utilizing digital tools for research, project creation, and collaboration within STEM projects.


  • Lead and Integrate STEM Learning:
    • Develop and implement an interactive STEM curriculum that encourages creativity, innovation, and aligns with state and national standards.
    • Create a physical and digital learning environment (e.g., a makerspace or innovative learning lab) that fosters STEM exploration and hands-on learning, including activities such as coding, robotics, 3D printing, and thinking.
    • Collaborate with teachers to integrate STEM concepts and resources into the curriculum across grade levels and subject areas.
    • Organize and lead extracurricular STEM-related clubs, competitions, and events, such as a school science fair.
    • Guide students in computational thinking and the creation of new technologies.
    • Connect students and teachers with STEM professionals and organizations to expand learning opportunities.


  • Collaborate with the School Community:
    • Work as an instructional partner with teachers to integrate library resources, technology, and STEM concepts into classroom lessons and activities.
    • Assist teachers in selecting appropriate materials and resources for curriculum units, including specialized STEM resources.
    • Provide professional development opportunities for teachers on utilizing library resources, integrating technology, and incorporating STEM practices into their teaching.
    • Collaborate with administrators, parents, and community partners to promote library programs and support student learning in STEM.


  • Program Administration:
    • Prepare and manage the school library media program, budget, allocating resources effectively to support curriculum, student needs, and STEM initiatives.
    • Utilize data and assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of the library program and identify areas for continuous improvement.
    • Maintain a positive, safe, and inviting physical and online library space that promotes learning, collaboration, and inquiry for all students.
