Job Description

The Dallas Morning News is seeking a sharp, enterprising reporter to cover the business of sports — a high-impact beat that examines the crossroads of money, power and athletics in one of the most influential sports markets in the country.

Although The News dominates athletic coverage in a city that’s fanatical about sports, this is a new role that will allow us to put a stamp on the hard-charging people and money driving the industry in North Texas.

From billion-dollar teams and stadium finance to NIL money and the shifting media landscape, you'll help readers understand how sports shape — and are shaped by — the region's economy, politics, and culture. This role is ideal for a journalist who sees sports as a business as much as a game, and that person will have the opportunity to work in one of the best newsrooms in the country.

What you'll cover:

The business dealings of major pro teams in North Texas, including the Cowboys, Mavericks, Rangers, Stars, Wings and FC Dallas — and the money moves of the players associated with those teams.

College sports finance, realignment, and NIL developments at powerhouse institutions like SMU and TCU.

Major revenue trends, media rights deals, labor issues, sports betting, endorsements, and public funding decisions.

Stadium projects, ticket pricing, fan experience trends, and regional economic impact of sports.

Legal and regulatory shifts involving leagues, teams, players, and sponsors.

Responsibilities:

Break news, and write deeply reported enterprise stories.

Build and maintain a wide network of sources across sports, business, law, media and higher education.

Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business, sports and visuals teams.

Contribute to live events, panel discussions, native videos, and other storytelling platforms.

Turn complex financial and legal developments into clear, accessible reporting for a broad audience.

Job Requirements

Here’s our list of preferred skills and experience: (Please note this is not a checklist of requirements, but should be considered as a pool of preferred qualifications. If you can already do some of these things, great. If you're excited about figuring out how to do all of them, great! We'd love to hear from you either way.".)

Job requirements:

  • Applicants should have at least three years of related reporting experience
  • Valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments.

Qualifications:

  • Three years of reporting experience, ideally with exposure to business, investigative, or sports journalism.
  • Strong sourcing, writing and reporting skills.
  • Aptitude for financial documents, public records and legal filings.
  • Track record of strong enterprise work and breaking news.
  • Adept with social media and website analytics.
  • Familiarity with the Dallas-Fort Worth sports landscape is a plus, but not required.
  • Fluency in Spanish is an advantage.

Education:

  • A bachelor's degree in journalism or related field

The Dallas Morning News is a storied newsroom with a reputation for fearless reporting and local accountability. We're investing in beats that help our readers make sense of the forces shaping life in North Texas. Few beats offer as much visibility and narrative potential as the business of sports.

We believe our community is best served by a diverse newsroom that fosters an inclusive work environment for people from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, age or sexual orientation.
