Film Product Development Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Engineer to join our team at PPG Advanced Film Technologies in New Albany, Ohio. You will be based in our state-of-the-art pilot-scale facility, contributing to the development of innovative coatings technologies. Our thermoplastic film technologies enhance customization, lightweighting, and protective properties for automotive applications and beyond.

As part of our Pilot Scale Development team, you will accelerate the assessment of new formulations and simulate customer line conditions to support successful product launches.

Joining our team offers the opportunity to leverage PPG's expertise in technology development, bridging laboratory results with manufacturing excellence. You will develop science and technology for PPG AST films, collaborating across new business and product development, integrating material science, engineering, and chemistry.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develop new lab and pilot line test methods to accelerate formulation assessment and simulate customer line conditions, increasing product launch success rates.
  2. Design projects to evaluate material properties and their applications, including thermomechanical properties and interfaces.
  3. Establish pilot line capabilities and formulate property-process relationships to define performance based on chemistry and materials science.
  4. Develop pilot trials and coordinate scale-up to production teams.
  5. Generate ideas for new film systems and thermoforming processes.
  6. Lead technical milestones.
  7. Ensure safety by following all lab procedures and maintaining high safety standards.

Qualifications

  1. Experience in polymer production.
  2. BS/MS in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields, with 8+ years of relevant experience in coatings.
  3. Or Ph.D. with 5 years of experience.
  4. Experience in pilot-scale or manufacturing-scale environments, especially in extrusion, thermoplastics, or thermoforming.
  5. Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting industrial pilot-scale equipment, with strong mechanical skills, and experience in specifying new manufacturing and testing equipment.
  6. Experience with experimental design (DOE).
  7. Strong cross-cultural and functional communication skills, with an understanding of materials science and a willingness to work globally.
  8. Travel requirements will be communicated accordingly.
