Organist/Assistant Director of Music (Part-Time)
Saint Paul United Methodist Church is seeking a talented, passionate, and collaborative Organist/Assistant Director of Music to join our vibrant worship and arts ministry. This part-time position (15 hours/week) supports the Director of Music and Worship Arts in leading a diverse and growing music program that ranges from traditional organ-led worship to contemporary praise music.
Position Summary
The Organist/Assistant Director of Music works closely with the Director of Music and Worship Arts to provide weekly organ music in worship. This person will also inspire, equip, and lead volunteer music teams. This may include handbells, contemporary worship teams, or other ensembles as assigned. The ideal candidate will have a heart for ministry, strong musical skills, and the ability to engage people of all ages in using their gifts for worship.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Director of Music in all aspects of the music ministry
- Accompany the Traditional Worship service weekly on piano and/or organ
- Provide weekly prelude and postlude music for the Traditional service (organ)
- Accompany seasonal concerts as needed
- Substitute for the Music Director when required
- Assist with sound setup (microphones, monitors, etc.)
- Develop small group music ministries in designated areas
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in music
- High energy and strong work ethic
- Proficient in accompanying a wide range of styles—from classical to modern—on piano and organ
- Ability to adapt to and embrace change
- Skills in recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer teams
- Basic technical knowledge for setting up sound equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a church accompanist
- A working knowledge of music notation software such as Sibelius, Dorico, or MuseScore for creating lead sheets, hymn sheets, or similar materials
- Ability to freely improvise on piano or organ and match the tone of the service
- Strong choral singing and conducting skills
