Basic Function  The job of Library Media Assistant is done for the purpose/s of maintaining the library collections at school sites; identifying age appropriate resources for students and teachers utilizing library resources; selecting appropriate items in support of classroom instruction; and performing clerical functions related to collection, processing, circulation, maintenance, and inventory of library materials and/or textbooks.

This job reports to Designated Administrator.  Representative Duties  Essential Functions

Assists teachers, students and administrators for the purpose of identifying resource materials for use in classroom and/or class assignments.

Assists teachers in monitoring student activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment conducive to learning in library setting.

Creates story time lessons virtual and in person for the purpose of helping students interact with books and develop literacy skills.

Evaluates books and/or periodicals for retention within collection (e.g. repairing damaged books, recommending retirement of books and/or periodicals, discarding obsolete materials and damaged books, deleting barcodes, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials and sending obsolete materials to the warehouse.

Maintains materials inventory and records (e.g. library books, library hardware/software, media equipment and related instructional materials, accountability records, deleted barcodes, etc.) for the purpose of providing an up-to-date reference and ensuring the availability of materials when required.

Operates a variety of office equipment, library equipment, media production equipment, systems and troubleshoots (lightly) IT needs (e.g. video tape, document cameras, audio visual equipment, copier, computer, assigned software, Chromebooks, etc.) for the purpose of providing media production services.

Orders supplies and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability of library books and materials as needed.

Organizes and prepares library displays, decorations, and bulletin boards for the purpose of maintaining the library in a neat and orderly condition.

Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, book fairs, and other special events for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform library functions.

Performs circulation activities of library materials and audio-visual equipment, and maintains records of classroom equipment (e.g. item check-in and check-out, circulation count, lists of overdue items, document cameras, LCD projectors, speakers, Chromebooks, emails and letters to parents and students, etc.) for the purpose of controlling the use, location, and availability of items in the collection; shelving returned books and materials.

Prepares documents and reports (e.g. collection statistics, scheduling reports/requests, renewal information, overdue lists, textbook orders, fines, costs, inventory records, patron status, etc.) for the purpose of providing documentation and information to others.

Processes library books, periodicals, software and related media materials (e.g. logging into master files; bar coding, shelving, producing required reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing students and staff with required materials.

Processes new student library cards; notices of missing, damaged, or overdue books, Chromebook, media, and materials; fines/fees for textbooks, generates receipts/invoices; collects monies, and corresponds and schedules money drop off to accounting department at the district office for the purpose of providing and/or maintaining access to library resources and securing reimbursement for loses.

Repairs books and materials, gathers information for repairs, collects fines, and arranges for equipment repairs as necessary for the purpose of ensuring the availability of books and library materials and imputing tickets into designated system for repairs as needed.

Responds to inquiries of students, staff, parents, District personnel, and outside agencies (e.g. availability of books, finding appropriate reference documents, status of overdue fines, etc.) for the purpose of exchanging information and/or direction as required and resolving issues or concern.

Sets-up audio visual equipment as directed for the purpose of meeting the needs of school functions. Â Initial/Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school, or equivalent.
  • One year (1) of general clerical or library experience.
  • Â ALL candidates MUST TAKE AND OBTAIN A PASSING SCORE on the Lynwood Unified School District Proficiency Assessment (Written Examination), which meets a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrates, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics. Â
  • Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

  Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions  SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: Operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and basic library software (Destiny) and hardware.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent policies, procedures, rules and regulations; modern office practices, procedures and equipment; basic library methods, practices and terminology; basic reference and cataloging techniques including the Dewey Decimal system; basic functions, operations and maintenance of a school library; and operation of a computer and assigned software.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: use of current media and library equipment, materials, and supplies; establish and maintain effective relationships; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain various records related to work performed; monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library; understand and follow oral and written instructions; and complete work with many interruptions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
