Located in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC) is a newly independent public community college accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Purpose and Scope:
Under direct supervision, the Library Specialist, Lead performs specialized library tasks to support daily library operations and services. Responsibilities include a range of technical, clerical, operational, and customer service duties within one or more functional areas of library services. This position plays a key role in assisting with the delivery of resources and services to students, faculty, staff, and the public, ensuring a welcoming, efficient, and service-oriented environment.
The Library Specialist, Lead, may also assist in developing policies, procedures, and programs for institutional library operations and services at the request of the Library Director. Duties may involve work in circulation, reference assistance, interlibrary loans, technical services, archives, collection maintenance, and outreach activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties listed represent typical responsibilities of this classification and do not include all tasks that may be assigned. Similar or related duties may also be required.



  • With minimal supervision, manages, maintains, and oversees library integrated library system. 

  • Performs specialized technical tasks to ensure system components are functioning properly.

  • Resolves routine operational problems and provides first-level troubleshooting of relevant library systems.

  • Leads in the planning, organizing, and implementation of technology related library services.

  • Review, evaluate, and ensure appropriate services are being provided to library clients and staff

  • Assists library visitors with reference and library related services.

  • Performs standard circulation and circulation desk duties, as needed.

  • Communicate with vendors and campus TSS experts related to digital and technology related services.

  • Creates and develops tutorials, training, and promotional materials for online and print access.

  • Collaborate on projects and activities, as assigned.

  • Serve on committees and workgroups, as assigned.

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned to support the overall operation and mission of the library.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Capable of navigating library management software for checkouts, renewals, item searches, and patron accounts.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to interact courteously and effectively with diverse patrons, staff, and community members in person, over the phone, and via email.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately and efficiently. Demonstrates attention to detail and reliability in performing assigned tasks.

  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications or similar software. Competent in word processing, spreadsheets, email, and internet research.

  • The ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in a busy, public-facing environment.

  • Skill in basic troubleshooting of library equipment such as printers, copiers, and public computers. Provides first-level support and resolves routine operational issues.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Supports a cooperative work environment while also managing individual responsibilities with minimal supervision.

  • Knowledge of general library operations, procedures, and customer service practices.
     Understands the basic functions of a library, including circulation, cataloging, and public service responsibilities.
