Job Title: Editor, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work (1-Year Contract)

Location: New York City preferred, remote possible

Contract Type: Fixed-Term (12 months)

Reports To: US Technology Editor

Start Date: As soon as possible

About the Role

The Guardian is seeking a dynamic and experienced editor to lead coverage on one of the most pressing issues of our time: how artificial intelligence is transforming work. From warehouse floors to movie sets to boardrooms, AI is reshaping jobs, industries, and livelihoods—and we want to tell those stories with depth, nuance, and global relevance.

As the editor of this year-long series, you will commission, edit, and write original journalism exploring the intersection of AI, the job hunt and the workplace. You'll work primarily with freelancers, and sometimes with staff reporters across desks, to shape a distinctive editorial agenda. And you'll ensure the project is national in scope, with storytelling from across the US.

The project should keep a strong focus on workers themselves, their experience of AI, and who stands to lose or benefit from its continued rollout. It will consider struggles and debates over this technology, from unions pushing for concessions to politicians aiming to limit regulation. And it should investigate the consequences of AI for young people as they enter the workforce.

This is a chance to define a major editorial focus for The Guardian and produce high-impact journalism that cuts through the hype and centers human experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write, commission and edit news stories, features, investigations, profiles, Q&As, and analysis on how AI is changing the nature of work
  • In tandem with the US tech and business editors, make sure the Guardian is covering the major news developments in the area of AI and work.
  • Identify gaps in coverage and develop story ideas that reflect diverse perspectives and industries, in the US, UK and globally
  • Maintain a network of expert sources, workers, and researchers in the field of AI and labor
  • Ensure all content meets The Guardian's standards of accuracy, fairness, and editorial independence
  • Work closely with the technology and business desks to ensure strategic alignment and effective collaboration

Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a commissioning editor or senior journalist in a newsroom. Strong understanding of artificial intelligence and its implications for labor, economics, and society
  • Excellent editing and story-shaping skills with a sharp news sense, particularly as it relates to the technology industry
  • Experience writing and editing technology coverage for a fast-paced digital news publication
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • A commitment to journalistic integrity, diversity, and The Guardian's editorial values. A commitment to editorial independence and understanding that good reporting will be both tough and fair in its coverage of the industry
  • Familiarity with digital journalism tools and formats, including newsletters, podcasts, and visual storytelling, is a plus
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a technology reporter or in a similar role.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
