Description: This is an exciting opportunity to join Holiday House, one of the world’s leading publishers of books and content for young readers, renowned for its truly original publishing and outstanding quality. Reporting to the Creative Director, the graphic novel designer creates files for book production. They should have a key understanding and appreciation for the graphic novel and comics space. They will work with design software such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Adobe Acrobat to prepare marketing materials, in both print and digital formats. The designer will also establish series books, find new talent, and collaborate closely with illustrators, editors, production staff, and freelance designers.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
•Design graphic novels and in collaboration with art director, editor, illustrator, and author.
•Take on occasional illustrated nonfiction, picture books, and novels as workflow allows.
•Work with production manager and managing editor to make sure books meet their sales deadlines and on sale dates.
•Work with Indesign scripts to load files and enter scheduling information into Biblio.
•Lead projects and establish new series and guide the consistency of established series titles.
•Route mechanicals, input corrections, alter and color correct art in photoshop, and other Adobe products, and release production-ready files to production.
•Find new talent via online portfolio reviews, art events and shows.
•Attend weekly cover meeting, accept useful feedback, and make appropriate adjustments to projects.
•Work with illustrators to guide art from sketches to final finished art for book production.
•Troubleshoot technical problems with graphic production staff or IT regarding fonts, file formatting, color correction. Ensure fonts used are legal for eBook and print usage.
•Perform other projects and tasks as needed.
This is a full-time position based in New York, NY with the option for hybrid work. The annual salary range for this role is $55,000 to $62,000 based on experience. Requirements: •Bachelor’s degree from four-year college/university/art school ideally with an emphasis on graphic design and experience in typography and advanced layout skills preferred but not required.
•Competency in Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Word. Understand the difference and preferences of print-ready and screen-ready file formats.
•4–6 years of design experience in the graphic novel and comics genre preferred.
•Express visual ideas effectively and professionally to colleagues and artists both verbally and in writing.
•Ability to work collaboratively and accept constructive criticism.
•Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
•Review and evaluate art samples, sketches, book dummies, and final artwork and communicate to stakeholders.
•Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
•Ability to work collaboratively and accept constructive criticism.
•Possess strong typographic ability and good sense of color usage.
•Apply basic math skills to concepts such as pagination, trim sizes, proportions when enlarging and reducing files and artwork.
•Manage time effectively while multitasking in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
