Analytics Data Modeler & Semantic Design Lead
Large Banking Client Duration: Through end of year - with potential to extend up to 18 months and/or convert FTE Location: Boston, MA, or New York, NY (2 days/week on-site) Hourly Rate: $80 - $95/HR on W2 Job Summary: The Analytics Data Modeler & Semantic Design Lead is responsible for ensuring that the logical data architecture aligns with the analytics and data science needs of the organization. This role bridges the business, data analytics, and IT data architecture teams by translating analytical requirements into well-structured, reusable, and business-aligned logical data models. Unlike the Physical Data Modeler, who sits within IT and focuses on schema deployment and technical implementation, this role is deeply embedded in the business and analytics function, owning semantic clarity, entity relationships, and data domain design from a decision-support perspective. Overview:
Analytics-Centric Logical Data Modeling
Design and document logical data models that reflect business concepts, data domains, and entity relationships to support analytics and reporting use cases. Ensure logical models align with data science, BI, and AI/ML requirements (e.g., customer lifecycle, product usage, channel engagement). Define relationships, cardinality, and granularity across domains (e.g., one customer to many products, time-bound journeys, etc.). Business Requirement Translation
Collaborate with product, marketing, journey, and data science teams to gather analytics and reporting requirements. Identify and model key analytical entities (e.g., digitally active customer, customer segment, channel preference, sales, revenue, etc). Translate questions like "How many customers are at risk of attrition?" into data model constructs. Metadata and Glossary Stewardship
Own the definition, documentation, and approval process for business metadata and key data elements (KDEs). Maintain and enhance the business glossary, ensuring definitions are consistent, approved, and mapped to data models and KPIs. Collaboration with IT and Physical Data Modelers
Serve as the primary analytics counterpart to IT data architects and physical modelers. Provide data requirements, validate physical schema designs, and review proposed changes for alignment with analytics use cases. Participate in data platform design discussions to ensure business semantic layers are preserved in implementation. Semantic Tagging & Discoverability
Apply semantic tags to glossary terms, metrics, and data entities using enterprise tools (e.g., Atlan, Collibra). Enable discoverability of metrics and models for self-service analytics. Scope Clarification: What This Role Is Not: This role does not own: Database deployment, ETL development, or physical schema tuning (owned by IT/physical data modeler). Master data systems or golden source definitions (owned by CDO or IT). BI visualization tools or front-end dashboard design (owned by BI developers or product analysts). Ideal Candidate Profile:
Understands data science, BI, and business analytics use cases deeply Skilled in logical/semantic modeling (e.g., ER diagrams, star schemas, fact-dimension design) Can align with both business users and data engineers with credibility Comfortable working with metadata, data definitions, and approval workflows Familiarity with Atlan, Collibra, DBT, Power BI datasets, ER/Studio or similar tools EEO Employer Apex Systems is an equal opportunity employer.
