Court Reporter Position

New hires will receive a $7,500 SIGNING BONUS. Salary increases are allocated into four steps, with progression after completing a year of service. A sign-on bonus of $7,500 is offered to all new bargaining unit employees, paid out over the first two years of employment. The Superior Court is now accepting applications for voice writers. Full-time, part-time, and extra help positions are available. Extra help positions are used by the Court to handle peak workload and vacancies but are not eligible for most Court benefits.

Court Reporters are responsible for making verbatim official records of court proceedings in machine shorthand and providing read back of all or portions of the record upon request. Under direction, this specialized classification stenographically records and maintains an official record of court proceedings, reads notes as requested, prepares transcripts, and performs other related duties as required.

Typical tasks include:

  • Attending court sessions and making verbatim stenographic records of the proceedings
  • Providing immediate read back of all or portions of the record upon request
  • Preparing printed or magnetic media transcripts of court proceedings
  • Reviewing, certifying, and filing printed transcripts of court proceedings
  • Processing court information/proceedings by use of realtime technology
  • Maintaining a variety of paper and electronic files

Typical qualifications include:

  • Certification by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Certified Shorthand Reporters Board
  • Realtime reporting is highly desirable
  • Employees will be eligible for reimbursements up to $2000 from the Court for limited equipment
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, basic medical and other specialized and technical terminology required for court proceedings and protocol
  • Ability to record shorthand at a minimum of 200 words per minute with 97.5% accuracy

Working conditions include:

  • Frequent and ongoing use of stenographic equipment to record verbatim proceedings
  • Frequent and ongoing use of electronic equipment to produce transcripts and other documents
  • Read back court proceedings in a clear concise manner in a courtroom or other setting
  • Occasional lifting, pushing, carrying of objects up to 15 pounds
  • Requires walking, some bending, stooping, and squatting
  • Continuous need for verbal comprehension and retention

The examination process will include one or more of the following: application appraisal; written examination; oral examination. The Superior Court is establishing an eligibility list from this recruitment which may be used to fill both temporary and permanent vacancies.
