Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB) is hiring a full-time Audience Engagement Editor to oversee its digital marketing efforts. LARB's Audience Engagement Editor will develop and implement digital marketing strategy with an eye toward engaging and expanding the publication's audience and reach. This individual will be principally responsible for developing, creating, scheduling, and sharing social media and newsletter content, as well as reporting, analyzing, and directing strategy on performance across platforms. LARB currently has a presence on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, YouTube, and LinkedIn, and publishes several regular newsletters via Mailchimp, but there is the potential to shift the distribution of content across social platforms and/or expand the platforms LARB uses.

LARB is looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented, data-driven, and creative individual who enjoys working collaboratively with others in a fast-paced environment and has a strong grasp of evolving social media and digital marketing platforms. The Audience Engagement Editor should be an effective and agile communicator who is able to track, anticipate, and respond to current trends and conversations, while engaging our broad base of readers and supporters in a timely, engaging, and professional manner. The ideal candidate would be self-directed, bring prior experience in digital marketing and newsletter management, and be passionate about LARB's work and publications. This individual should be adept at navigating the changing landscape of social media platforms, public forums, and newsletter distribution systems.

Following are the primary responsibilities of LARB's Audience Engagement Editor:

  • Create daily content as well as larger campaigns and strategy to grow an engaged audience for LARB's online articles, Radio Hour podcast, and print Quarterly in coordination with the editorial team
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and other staff members to create and implement promotional campaigns for other LARB events, programs, and fundraising efforts
  • Monitor social and site analytics daily and work closely with the LARB editorial and staff to respond and pivot as needed
  • Manage LARB's digital communications calendar, including all social media posts, newsletters, and marketing campaigns
  • Prepare monthly readership reports tracking audience engagement on our site, social platforms, and newsletters and share related insights and recommendations with team
  • Engage in social listening and communicate any issues (or positive buzz!) to LARB leadership and staff
  • Train, manage, and mentor interns
  • Help staff other LARB events throughout the year.
  • Perform such other duties as may be required or requested.

Required skills and qualities:

  • Ability to balance practical tasks with bigger-picture thinking about goals
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Fluency with analytics: ability to collect and interpret data from native social analytics, social analytics tools, Google Analytics and make recommendations
  • Familiarity with social media scheduling platforms (e.g. Loomly) and Meta Ads Manager
  • Existing proficiency in Mailchimp, Airtable, Microsoft Excel and Canva, or comparable programs
  • Editing and creating templates, graphics (e.g. Canva)
  • Proofreading: able to avoid errors (everything from typos to pronouns to misconstruing an article in the condensed space of social); sensitivity to tone
  • Keeping up on social media best practices and communicating them to team

Recommended skills and experience

  • Prior experience working with Google Analytics, Chartbeat, and/or other analytics platforms
  • Familiarity with SEO/SEM best practices, paid social, Google Ad Grants
  • Data analysis and visualization to unearth and communicate business insights to colleagues and board
  • Audio and/or video editing
  • Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with working in a CMS
  • Graphic design experience a plus
