Some of the duties you will perform are:
- Editorialworkaccountsfor95percentofpositionduties,asfollows:
- Reading and correcting advance sheet page proofs of opinions prepared by the contract publisher and reviewing final page proofs to ensure that all corrections havebeencorrectlyincorporatedbeforepublicationinofficialboundvolumesof Washington Reports and Washington Appellate Reports. This “bound volume reading”—applying exacting editing standards—accounts for 75 percentof the editorial work performed by the Assistant Editor.
- Assisting staff in editing opinions.
- Assisting staff in reviewing and editing proposed and adopted court rule amendments.
- Assisting staff in processing draft headnotes of opinions, processing petition for review orders, and coordinating publication ofcourt rule amendments with the contract publisher.
- Clerical work accounts for five percent of position duties, as follows:
- AnsweringinquiriesdirectedattheReporterofDecisionsandtheWashington Court Reports Commission and referring some inquiries to appropriate staff.
- Picking up and processing mail.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’sdegree,preferablyinEnglish,Journalism,Communications,orrelated field
OR
- Completion of a paralegal program.
AND
- Experience in effectively using word processing equipment.
- Demonstrationofrelevantworkexperiencemaysubstituteforeducationexperience.
- Experience in editing publications at the journal level is preferred.
THE IDEAL APPLICANT WILL ALSO HAVE SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES |
- Knowledge of legal terminology, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; legal reference sources; Washington court system and court procedure; editing procedures; proof reading symbols; computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Outlook; operation of common office equipment; standard office procedures,includingtyping,filing,photocopying,maintaininglogs,e-mailing, and telephone skills.
- Ability to verify the accuracy of legal text by consulting source material and reference works; communicate effectively orally and in writing with court staff and the public; comprehend technical legal writing; apply technical legal editing rules; operate computer word processing, e-mail, and file management programs.
