Description Of Job
Under the direction of a Regional Librarian, Programs Manager and Programs Supervisor, supervise the daily operation of a library in an adult correctional facility serving offenders of multiple classification levels. Working closely with the Regional Librarian, Program Manager/Administrator V, and Program Supervisor, it designs and implements the administrative operations of the library, including creating and revising procedures; writing, updating, and revising procedure manuals; planning, scheduling, and assigning work projects to offender library employees; developing work standards and monitoring work quality and flow; monitoring and planning for the expenditure of library funds; solving and proposing solutions to problems affecting the library operations and work standards; and exercising discretion regarding the application of library policies and procedures. This position will make them available to assist in other areas of the facility during emergency situations/lockdowns.
This position works directly with inmates in a state correctional facility.
Primary job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Answer requests for information by conducting reference interviews, determining where to locate the desired information and executing the search;
- Provide instruction to library users on information literacy and library skills; inform library users about availability of interlibrary loan; screen requests for compatibility with selection criteria; instruct patrons on loan procedures; search incoming books for content and contraband;
- Provide library service to inmates in Restricted Housing/diagnostic units who cannot visit the library;
- Recommend materials for addition to the library collection to meet the educational, informational and recreational needs of the inmate population;
- Assign classification numbers and subject headings for new materials by copying existing catalog records and modifying to comply with Dewey Decimal Classification, Abridged and Sears List of Subject Headings;
- Monitor behavior of inmate library users, enforce security regulations and library rules, call for the ejection of problem inmates, write reports on rule infractions, and act on resolving conflicts between offenders;
- Prepare annual funding requests;
- Report annual library expenditures;
- Compose and distribute monthly narrative and statistical reports;
- Supervise inmate library clerks through the assignment of tasks, monitoring progress and workflow, scheduling work, establishing work standards, and checking the final product;
- Provide initial and ongoing training for inmate library clerks;
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Three (3) years of technical or high level clerical experience (This work experience must be clearly described, in your own words, in the work history section of your application to meet this requirement.) A ny work experience less than full time will be prorated.
Technical work is defined as skilled work in the practical application of specialized techniques, procedures, practices, or methods in order to accomplish tasks. The specialized work is a direct extension of a professional field which requires an understanding of that field, the nature of the work requires that it revert to a professional if not performed by a technician.
High Level clerical experience includes the following: document creation, word processing; create and revise office procedures; compiling and formatting the content for program materials such as annual reports and newsletters; screening documents and supporting information to determine eligibility, authenticity, or identity; accounting for the unit's allotted funds by authorizing operating expenditures.

Education and Experience: A combination of college or university coursework in Criminal Justice, Business Management, Public Administration, Information Science, or a related field and related experience as defined above equal to three (3) years.
