Job Description
The Library Community Specialist I, under supervision, provides general customer service, event support, and other basic library functions in public services. Under close supervision, the specialist may learn more advanced functions related to organizing library programs.
Applicants must be authorized to work for any US employer. The department is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.
Essential Duties and Tasks:Library Program Support
- Provides general customer service support during library public service events.
- Helps troubleshoot basic issues during library programming for children or adults and escalates more complex questions to a supervisor.
- Designs marketing materials related to the library’s summer camps, tutoring, and other requested library outreach events.
- Updates selected pages of the library website to include current resources related to educational and recreational programming in the library.
- Responds to basic questions about resources in the library and directs more advanced questions to the reference librarian on duty.
- Explains library policies and procedures with a thorough understanding and seeks clarification when necessary.
- Documents and brings serious procedural or customer satisfaction issues to the attention of a library manager in public services.
- Demonstrates basic conflict resolution skills with users.
- Provides assistance or coverage for student employees working with the library’s tutoring program, as needed.
- Maintains a front desk atmosphere that promotes customer satisfaction.
- Completes basic circulation tasks, such as checking in and out items and shelving materials.
- Assists in monitoring the public environment and responds to disruptions.
- Available to work during scheduled morning, daytime, or late evening hours.
- Submits required forms for library programming approval, which may include program itineraries, marketing materials, and safety procedures.
- Handles the registration process for library programs, which may include tutoring, summer camps, or monthly events.
- Requests room usage and parking permits, as needed, for library events.
- Creates inventory lists of necessary supplies, such as snacks and other program materials, and tracks utilization of library event resources.
- Notify registered participants (or their guardians, in the case of minors) about program location and details for library events.
- Performs library sweeps for compliance with food/drink/noise guidelines during programs or events.
- Participates in staff and task force meetings, which includes planning for and evaluating library public services.
- Attends library and public service meetings and trainings, as needed.
- Collaborates with other staff to ensure the best service possible to library users through participatory decision-making.
- High School graduation or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One year of related library or instruction experience
- One year of experience working with children.
- One year of experience supporting public programs or events.
- One year of customer service and/or clerical experience.

- Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Knowledge of email and internet search engines.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Basic keyboarding skills.

- Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.
- The employee must be able to safely pull, push, lift, and carry items weighing up to forty (40) pounds; push a fully loaded book truck weighing approximately seventy-five (75) pounds.
Hours: 4:30-9:00 pm on Mondays-Thursdays OR 12:30-7:30 pm (with a lunch break between 3:30-4:30 pm) on Tuesdays-Thursdays during long semesters.
