Seeking Long-Term Substitute Music Teacher

Brightfield School is seeking an innovative, collaborative, and passionate music educator to provide approximately 1 day of music instruction each week through the 2025-26 school year, starting mid- late November, with a preference for Fridays on campus. This position comes with the unique opportunity to partner with classroom teachers to create integrated opportunities for students enrolled in a progressive, place-based independent school in Bath, Maine to explore music and performance in conjunction with their class theme studies.

Summary

At Brightfield, you will find a student-centered, teacher-led, collaborative community. Brightfield’s Music Teacher will contracted for 1 day of work each week that school is in session in order to plan, prepare, and deliver approximately 3-4 hours of music instruction total in 30 minute - 1 hour blocks to 3-4 student groups:

  • An approximately 8 student classroom of 1st and 2nd graders - focused on storytelling, rhythm, and movement. Instruction should include lots of singing, with an emphasis on group singing and "repeat-after-me", as well as introduction to percussion instruments, and basic rhythm notation.
  • An approximately 12 student classroom of 3rd and 4th graders - focused on basic music literacy, with emphasis on soprano recorder and voice. Rhythm and movement games should be used to reinforce concepts, and student choice taken into account in developing pieces for showcasing to the community.
  • An approximately 10 student classroom of 5th, 6th, 7th , and 8th graders - focused on a progression from the soprano and alto recorder to ukulele with the option to incorporate other instruments based on student’s experience with music outside of school. Upper school students explore composition and songwriting opportunities in conjunction with classroom projects.

The Music Teacher will have access to a dedicated classroom space on the day in which music is being held and to the land, area, and communities surrounding Brightfield as an extended classroom for their music arts curriculum.

The Music Teacher will also have access to classroom teachers to help to get to know their students and to be aware of theme studies projects that change throughout the year and may offer inspiration or opportunities for integration with the music curriculum.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Has experience creating and delivering music curriculum to students in primary grades
  • Has broad knowledge of music and experience providing skill-based music instruction across a range of grade levels.
  • Has knowledge of – and experience teaching in - place-based, nature-based, or experiential learning environments.
  • Values a safe, supportive, and inspiring learning community with students, understands the social-emotional importance of the school experience, and is knowledge of the ‘whole child’ approach.
  • Is comfortable setting clear behavior and academic expectations for students and using positive discipline as needed.
  • Embraces collaboration with colleagues, students, parents, and the local community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 3 or more years of music teaching experience
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal and writing).
  • Understanding of positive discipline.
