Are you an adventurous spirit with a love for the mountain lifestyle? Do you have a nose for news and a gift for storytelling? The Vail Daily, located in the heart of the Colorado High Country, is seeking a versatile reporter who can juggle daily news coverage with longer-term investigative projects. This reporter will cover local government and chase stories on topics such as housing, local business, outdoor recreation, climate change, and health. We are looking for someone with one to two years of experience in a daily journalism environment.

As a reporter in our newsroom, you’ll focus on daily coverage, enterprise stories, and investigative reporting. The ideal candidate will have excellent reporting skills and be able to produce timely explanatory pieces, quick analysis of breaking news, and compelling profiles of key local figures. You should be a strategic planner capable of executing coverage plans and adapting quickly to news developments. Attention to detail is crucial — from planning coverage to meeting deadlines, conducting thorough research, and crafting clear, jargon-free stories that engage our digital audience.

At the Vail Daily, we produce award-winning journalism that captures the spirit of Eagle County and strengthens community bonds. In 2022 and 2024, we received the General Excellence award from the Colorado Press Association, along with an Editorial Excellence award in 2024. We work hard, play hard, and live to tell the story of this remarkable place, known worldwide for its stunning scenery, world-class ski resorts, and hospitality. And yes, it snows here — a lot, if we’re lucky.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  1. Generating 6-7 stories per week.
  2. Taking photos and videos, and sharing content on social media.
  3. Using social media tools effectively to source stories and increase traffic.
  4. Collaborating with community leaders and newsroom staff.
  5. Adapting to a fast-paced, changing environment.
  6. Ensuring accuracy, fairness, and correct spelling in all reporting.
  7. Following the direction and vision of the editor.
  8. Meeting all deadlines without exception.
  9. Covering reporting vacancies as needed.
  10. Maintaining ethical standards as per the editor’s guidelines.
  11. Being a team player and assisting where needed.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in journalism, English, or communications.
  • One year of reporting experience.
  • Availability to work some nights and weekends.
  • Experience with content management systems.
  • Digital photography skills.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods.
  • Current driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Pay: $22-$24/hour depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage after 60 days, a $500 recreation bonus after six months, and a 401k plan with company match after one year. The office ski pass is also available.

Swift Communications is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, veteran status, or other protected characteristics.

Apply with resume, cover letter, and clips.
