Duties And Responsibilities

The Metadata Services Librarian is responsible for producing original and copy cataloging record for the library’s digital and physical collections in a variety of formats. Responsible for metadata quality control, database maintenance and authority control tasks. Contributes to orderly movement of materials through processing workflow. Trains and assists staff members, volunteers, and interns working on digital archives projects.

  • Searches and creates original and copy catalog record in MARC format for materials in various formats, enhance MARC record when needed.
  • Depending upon areas of expertise and existing needs within the division, Metadata Librarians are expected to do some combination of the following: create MARC records for serials, monographs, A/V materials, maps, musical scores, eContent, and government documents.
  • All Metadata Librarians must fulfill departmental quality standards.
  • Utilizes print and database reference tools to inform professional decision-making.
  • Performs transliteration and addition of vernacular scripts for original and copy cataloguing and uploads the vernacular to OCLC union catalog.
  • Assists with collection development and maintenance.
  • Serves on language committees as assigned to develop and maintain collections.
  • Performs written translations as needed for NAP and Marketing.
  • Creates VRA, and EAD records and archival materials (maps, photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, musical scores, etc.).
  • Creates and edits transcriptions using automated transcription tools for audio/visual materials.
  • Performs database searching and maintenance for bibliographic and authority records.
  • Uses automation tools such as MarcEdit, Perl and Python. Cleans up records with errors in linked data, bad Unicode, and other inaccuracies.
  • Uploads digital assets and metadata to digital asset management system.
  • Tests new cataloging technologies to identify bugs and needed enhancements.
  • Interfaces as assigned with vendors to identify and resolve issues with purchased metadata records and with licensed software.
  • Performs testing on the library’s ILS, OPAC, and website.
  • Creates original authority records including corporate, series title, and personal name records that fulfill the PCC’s NACO standards. Inclusion of URIs for name authorities.
  • Contributes to development of local controlled vocabularies for place name authorities. Contributes controlled vocabulary to the LGBTQ Homosaurus. Controls subject headings (LCSH) and genre headings (LCGFT) to comply with Library of Congress standards.
  • Assists in training of clerical staff, volunteers and interns in the areas of work-form creation, database searching & maintenance, and digital archives projects. Performs peer review of work products and demonstrate established procedures. Conducts quality control reviews on completed records and provides constructive feedback and necessary training.
  • Contributes new PCC records each month to maintain the library’s status as a PCC partner, including the creation and modification of NACO records. Stays up to date on developments in MARC RDA cataloging, BIBFRAME developments, and national metadata standards and trends.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • New York State Public Librarian’s Certificate.
  • Fluency with a language spoken in Queens required.
  • Able to perform independently, be self-motivated, adapt to constant change, and juggle multiple tasks with a positive attitude. Attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work well as a team member. Willingness to adapt to new technologies and processes.
  • Familiarity with Adobe and Microsoft Office Suites required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous cataloging experience desirable, especially in MARC format.
  • Familiarity with VRA Core, EAD, MARCEdit and Symphony ILS system preferred.
  • Familiarity with database software.
  • Experience with archival processing, digital asset management systems, digital imaging and digital preservation preferred.
