The purpose of the class is to perform routine library functions and general clerical work in the Circulation Department and to perform related work as required.This class works according to set procedures under close supervision.
ESSENTIAL TASKS
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Assists the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Performs routine library and general clerical work in the Circulation department.Provides coverage in other departments and locations as needed.
Checks books in and out; registers patrons for library cards; places holds on books as requested; inspects returned materials for damage; verifies due date; computes and receives fines.
Retrieves deposited materials from book return.
Shelves Library materials; reads and straightens shelves.
Assists patrons in using various resources and equipment of the Library, including the online catalog. Refers persons needing additional assistance to a Librarian; locates books and other materials for patrons; interprets Library policies and procedures to the public.
Maintains accurate and up-to-date records.
Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints in areas of responsibility.
Keeps supervisor informed of all issues and concerns encountered.
Assists co-workers with duties as required.
Performs routine clerical work as required, including but not limited to entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, assembling materials, answering the telephone, processing daily mail, etc.
Attends continuing education classes, meetings and/or workshops to maintain and enhance job knowledge and skills.
Receives and deposits monies using the cash register; generates receipts and reconciles money daily; prepares reporting paperwork.
Drives transit route as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:
Requires handling or using machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; may service office machines including adding paper and changing toner.
COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
REASONING REQUIREMENTS:
Requires performing semi-skilled work following procedures with occasional problems.
MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires using basic addition and subtraction, such as making change or measuring.
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires doing clerical,manual, or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION
VOCATIONAL EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess valid state driver's license.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires over six months and up to and including one year.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires light work that involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy. Must be able to lift 25 pounds and meet other physical demands of shelving books and materials, including pushing loaded book trucks; stooping, bending and stretching.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, and color perception.
