The Enterprise of Brockton/enterprisenews.com, part of theUSA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a tenacious, self-starting, digitally savvy journalist to be our trending reporter, identifying, verifying and curating news of what Brockton-area residents are talking about.
The reporter will spot rising trending topics in the Brockton area each weekday morning and quickly create high interest stories to reach new audiences and encourage loyal readers to subscribe. The beat will start at 6 a.m. Monday to Friday to feed online audiences when they’re most active.
This job requires an understanding of social media, Google Trends, audience metrics and SEO techniques; quick, tight, lively writing; and a competitive mindset determined to see one’s work at the top of our pageview charts each day.
This reporter will chase news, sports, politics, business and entertainment stories, as well as features, about topics already trending online or based on online conversations. This reporter is also expected to have the range to handle breaking news coverage and quick-turn enterprise.
It’s a high-volume beat, responsible for one to three short posts most weekdays, while balancing some ongoing longer-range features. Doing the job well requires more than curation. This reporter is expected to add smart context and do some original reporting – answering the questions on readers’ minds in a clear, concise and compelling way.
Brockton, Massachusetts, known as the “City of Champions” because it was home to boxing greats Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler, has undergone a dramatic demographic transformation, particularly in the past decade, and is now majority people of color. Home to vibrant African-American, Cape Verdean and Haitian communities, as well as many others, this city of about 100,000 located half-way between Boston and Providence has become a beacon of affordable suburban and urban housing. Brockton can claim restaurants that are destinations for foodies, as well as a Black-owned craft beer company, a dynamic hip-hop scene and its own symphony orchestra. We are looking for a reporter to help tell these diverse stories, as well as the stories of our surrounding towns, with their picturesque and historic New England downtowns, colleges and universities and cultural institutions. Responsibilities:
- Primary focus will be on trending news coverage
- Be a curious, assertive, and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
- Capitalize on live, breaking and trending moments by creating quick-turn-around content for social media and other digital platforms
- Monitor Google Trends and other search tools for hot topics and moments with rising interest
- Be proficient on the latest social media tools and trends, specifically on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram
- Optimize, aggregate and package content for digital publication. Enhance content with video, galleries, SEO meta-data, hyperlinks and images
- Use metrics to monitor real-time story/content performance, determine digital readership/traffic patterns and make changes in content tied to the data. Familiarity with Parse.ly and analytics products to best reach the target audience a plus.
- Produce content in alternative forms, such as listicles, Q&As, narratives, photo galleries and video
- Work collaboratively as part of a team with other reporters and editors. Occasionally, fill in on other beats to assist in coverage of breaking news and other tent-pole events.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3 or more years of professional journalism experience or significant internship experience
- High-level writing, communication and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline
- Ability to produce content that is clean, accurate and publication ready
- Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing
- This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
