The Health Promotion Educator improves well-being of the campus community by designing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs aimed at improving the well-being of students by addressing prevalent campus health issues like alcohol and drug use, sexual health, mental health, nutrition, and physical activity, often through outreach initiatives, workshops, and educational campaigns, while collaborating with student organizations and campus health services to promote positive health behaviors across the student body. As part of the Dean of Students Office, this candidate will provide an environment that supports wellness behaviors, promotes healthy lifestyle choices, and provides health education that is consistent with the mission and goals of higher education. The Health Promotion Educator reports to the Nurse Manager of Student Health Services and collaborates frequently with the Campus Victim Advocate from Turningpoint, Title IX Coordinator, Counseling Services, and other departments across campus.
The ideal candidate will be able to educate students, faculty, and staff by developing and delivering training and programming in a variety of environments (in person, remote, etc.) and to a variety of audiences (athletics, student orgs, Greek Life, club sports, resident assistants, student employees, faculty, and staff) around violence prevention, alcohol awareness, and other topics such as sexual health, social and emotional health, stress alleviation, nutrition and healthy eating, anxiety and depression, and suicide awareness and prevention.
Responsibilities
Violence Prevention Training & Programming
- Plan, prepare, and deliver training and programming on sexual/interpersonal violence, public awareness and prevention campaigns, and education efforts, but utilizing common language including definitions of types of sexual and relationship violence and consent, including positive concepts of healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and inclusion of populations that often have been marginalized. Evaluate program effectiveness. Presenting to sports teams is a major component of this point, and includes content pertaining to hazing required by the NCAA.
- Provide regular updates around training and programming efforts to Title IX Coordinator, Deputy Title IX Coordinators, campus Title IX Committee, and others as necessary.
- When requested, provide students and staff with general information about reporting options and advocacy services. This position does not regularly provide direct or individual advocacy to students but works with others to ensure confidential and timely referrals to the Campus Victim Advocate for these services. This position is considered a confidential employee. Confidential employees are only required to report the occurrence of the sexual assault/sexual violence to the Title IX Coordinator, not specific identifying information, and submit statistical reports without identifying the victim.
- Enhance awareness and education for the campus community regarding when and how to intervene with a person in need, or bystander intervention/Step Up. In particular, focus on this with sexual violence efforts.
- Coordinate, plan, prepare, and deliver training and programming on ATOD education, public awareness campaigns, and education efforts.
- Educate students, faculty, and staff by developing and delivering training and programming in a variety of environments (In person, remote, etc.) and to a variety of audiences (athletics, student orgs, Greek Life, club sports, resident assistants, student employees, faculty, and staff).
- Apply for monies, such as the SPARK grant.
- Leads, plans, and coordinates Student Health/Wellness sponsored health education outreach activities including frequent collaboration with staff in various campus departments and the River Falls community on topics such as sexual health, social and emotional health, stress alleviation, nutrition and healthy eating, physical activity, healthy sleep, anxiety and depression, and suicide awareness and prevention.
- Keep up-to-date and informed on current issues pertinent in college health and work collaboratively to assure up-to-date, accurate, pertinent health-related information and education.
- Marketing plan that consists of events, social media, poster stands, UC tables, posters in Res Halls, table tents, access TV, and yard signs covering multiple health topics such as alcohol and other drugs, healthy eating and food insecurity, sleep, depression and anxiety, sexual health, etc.
Organize, lead, and serve on campus and community task forces, committees, that are connected to violence prevention, ATOD education, health policies, various health related topics, etc.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Provides consultation, training, and capacity-building resources for stakeholders to advance a health-promoting setting with respect to policies, learning and working environments, physical spaces, services and support, student development, and/or opportunities for social connectedness
- Gathers and evaluates population-level health data and engages with stakeholders to discern needs and interests and build capacity for population-level health improvement
- Applies evidence-based theories, frameworks, and assessments according to current health research and practice
- Develops, implements, organizes, and evaluates population-health initiatives based on sound data, theory, and evidence
- One year of professional or educational experience with issues surrounding college student health, health promotion and education, community health, public health, or related field.
- Experience developing prevention, professional development, education, or training programs.
- Willingness to develop and deliver training and programming for a variety of audiences, including students, faculty, staff, and community members, via a variety of platforms (in person, virtual/remote, electronic).
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication and enthusiastic presentation skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving and leadership skills and willingness to take initiative and ownership of training and prevention work.
- Strong understanding of health behavior theory and change strategies.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Familiarity with current trends in college student health issues
- Master's degree in public health, health promotion or education, community health, public health, or related field.
- Two years of professional or educational experience with issues surrounding college student health, health promotion and education, community health, public health, or related field.
- Knowledge of Title IX, Clery Act/Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Campus SaVE Act, and Wisconsin State Statues, as they pertain to victim rights and prevention education efforts.
- Experience working collaboratively with external and internal partners.
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification
- Bachelor's Degree is required.
- Master's degree in public health, health promotion or education, community health, public health, or related field is preferred.
