Court Reporter Job Shadowing Opportunity (Unpaid)

Schedule: 8:30 AM or 1:30 PM Start Time (based on court calendar)

Position Summary:
The Santa Cruz Superior Court is offering an unpaid Court Reporter Job Shadowing Program for students currently enrolled in an accredited court reporting school. This in-person opportunity allows aspiring court reporters to gain valuable real-world experience by shadowing an Official Court Reporter during live courtroom proceedings.

Participants will observe and gain exposure to a variety of legal settings, including trials, preliminary hearings, and general calendars across criminal, and/or juvenile. The goal of this program is to help students develop essential skills in accurate, real-time verbatim reporting of legal proceedings.

Requirements:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a court reporting school program.
  • This opportunity is open to traditional court reporting and voice reporters.
  • Must provide documentation verifying the ability to report at a speed of 200 words per minute or higher (e.g., a certificate or letter from a professor or instructor).
  • Must be available to start at 8:30 AM or 1:30 PM and remain until the courtroom takes a break or the calendar concludes for the session.
  • Must have a strong interest in pursuing a career in court reporting and demonstrate professionalism and discretion in a courtroom setting.

Important Notes:
  • This is an unpaid shadowing opportunity. There are no wages, stipends, or benefits associated with this program.
  • Shadowing sessions take place in person at the courthouse.
  • Professional attire is required

This limited term contract postion will work no more than 999 hours. The postion does not recieve paid leave, paid holidays, pension membership or life insurance. The postion will be entitled to 40 hours of sick leave.
