Job Summary
Classroom teachers create a supportive education program and environment conducive to learning and growth. They provide instruction appropriate to the grade level, establishing rapport with students, parents, and staff. Teachers motivate students to develop necessary skills, attitudes, and knowledge, reporting to and evaluated by the site principal.
Job Requirements
- A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
- Evidence of content knowledge by one of the following:
- A posted degree in the content area, or
- A posted minor in the content area, or
- Passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores in the content area, or
- A certificate endorsement in the content area.
Essential Job Functions
- Describe their philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to their practice.
- Understand how students learn and develop, and apply that knowledge.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior.
- Organize class time for instruction, demonstration, work, and assessment.
- Guide learning toward curriculum goals with clear objectives.
- Teach students respecting their individual and cultural characteristics.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction.
- Translate lesson plans into developmentally appropriate experiences.
- Utilize current technology to enhance instruction and record-keeping.
- Apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Facilitate, monitor, and assess student learning, evaluate growth, and keep records.
- Identify pupil needs, make referrals, and develop strategies for individual education plans.
- Create a positive learning environment with engaging displays and interest centers.
- Supervise the student environment, students, and volunteers.
- Collaborate with parents, families, and the community.
- Communicate regularly with parents via newsletters, notes, calls, and conferences.
- Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.
Physical / Mental Demands
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Visual abilities required. Ability to lift less than 40 lbs. Ability to understand instructions, recall facts, handle conflicts, and make decisions under pressure. Manage stress effectively in a diverse environment.
Work Environment
Professional setting with diverse individuals. Exposure to video displays and outdoor weather conditions. Moderate noise level.
