Job Description

Title: Adjunct Instructors, Communication, Art, & Design (Multiple Vacancies)

Unit: DCE adjunct faculty

Department: Liberal Arts Division, Communication, Art and Design Department

Reports to: Dean of Liberal Arts

Date: July 10, 2025

General Summary: This is an Open Pool posting for Adjunct Instructors in the Communication, Art, and Design (CA&D) Department at Middlesex Community College. While there may not be immediate openings, qualified applicants will be considered for future course sections as needed. The CA&D Department supports an interdisciplinary and equity-minded curriculum that prepares students for careers in media, design, and communication fields.

In addition to the general pool, we are currently seeking instructors for the following courses:

ART 103 - Drawing for Communication & Design

  • This course explores the use of both traditional and digital drawing as a means of visual communication in areas such as advertising, branding, product design, and storyboarding. Students develop core drawing techniques including perspective, shading, rendering, and sketching. The course also emphasizes the role of composition and color theory in design applications.

ART 156 - Media & Motion Design

  • This hands-on course introduces students to the principles of motion design and time-based media using Adobe Creative Cloud tools. Students learn concept development, storytelling, and design problem-solving through projects such as animated logos, typography, and short character sequences, with applications in visual communication, film, and branding.

ART 278 - Coding for Web Design

  • This course provides students with foundational coding skills?HTML, CSS, and JavaScript?to create professional, responsive, and accessible websites. Emphasizing real-world web development practices, students build interactive digital products that integrate visual design, UX/UI principles, and coding best practices.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Teach one or more courses based on department needs;
  • Deliver student-centered, inclusive instruction that meets course outcomes and supports diverse learners;
  • Use appropriate industry tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate, drawing tablets, etc.);
  • Engage students in hands-on learning, concept development, and project-based assessment;
  • Post syllabi, assignments, and grades via the Blackboard Learning Management System;
  • Fulfill terms of the faculty contract as set out in the Agreement between the Board of Higher Education and the Massachusetts Community College Council/Massachusetts Teachers Association for the Division of Continuing Education (DCE)

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related discipline (e.g., Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Animation, Web Design, Communication, or a relevant field) or equivalent professional experience;
  • Demonstrated expertise in the course subject area;
  • Proficiency with tools and platforms specific to each course (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, Procreate, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, etc.);
  • Experience teaching or training in academic or professional settings;
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching, equity-minded pedagogy, and student success;
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at the community college level;
  • Familiarity with Blackboard or other Learning Management Systems;
  • Industry certifications or substantial work experience in related creative or technical fields;
  • Experience integrating portfolio development, sustainability, or interdisciplinary collaboration into instruction.

Additional Information

Salary Range: The salary assigned will be determined in accordance with the DCE Collective Bargaining Agreement per credit salary chart.

Location: Lowell or Bedford campus as needed

Expected Start Date: Fall 2025
