ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Works under the general direction of an assigned supervisor in the E-911 PSAP/Communications Service Center, Police Services. Operates a computer-aided telephone, dispatch, and digital trunked simulcast radio system to provide emergency and routine dispatcher services to officers and the public. Collects and records information received by documenting the nature of the call, location, circumstances, description of responsible parties and/or suspects, and caller details. Determines response order to emergency and non-emergency calls based on available resources. Researches geographical information to assist Police Officers in responding to calls. Maintains status of field units through the CAD system via trunked radio system. Broadcasts information to dispatch units, provide suspect descriptions, and monitor travel and scene times for safety and efficiency. Updates lists and files to secure wrecker and ambulance services and ensure accurate information for callers. Attains and maintains Tennessee certification for public safety dispatchers through approved training for NCIC/TIES/NLETS systems. Provides Police Officers with information on stolen vehicles, wanted persons, criminal history, etc., by accessing relevant databases and responding to inquiries from law enforcement agencies. OTHER FUNCTIONS

Performs additional duties as assigned. Must be willing to work various shifts, including holidays and rotating days off. Must obtain and maintain Tennessee certification on NCIC/TIES/NLETS systems within one year of employment. Bilingual abilities are strongly preferred. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires use of equipment such as monitors, telephones, radios, and dispatch systems. Must communicate effectively, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, recognize hazards, and maintain composure in emergencies. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

The center is a highly secured, enclosed environment. Incumbents must stay at their station except during breaks, and may experience distractions from background noise. Proximity to others may also be a factor. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

At least 18 years old. U.S. citizen. No felony convictions or disqualifying violations. Honorable discharge if military service was served. High school diploma or equivalent, with typing skills, psychological assessments, and other qualifications as specified. Knowledge of Memphis is preferred. The City Charter requires employees (except first responders) to establish residence within Shelby County within six months of employment. Proof of residence is required at hire. First responders include full-time law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel. The City of Memphis provides accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
