Special Collections Librarian / Assistant Professor

McNeese State University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Special Collections Librarian / Assistant Professor in the Frazar Memorial Library. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified position. The appointment is available immediately.

SALARY: $50,000

The Special Collections Librarian reports to the Head of Archives & Special Collections. The Special Collections Librarian provides leadership for planning, implementing, and managing all aspects of both the Federal Depository Library collection and the Louisiana Public Documents Depository collection. The Special Collections Librarian also processes archival collections and maintains the rare books collections. The Special Collections Librarian provides reference and information services to the public in both the Government Information and Archives & Special Collections Departments.

In this position, the Special Collections Librarian:

  • Provides reference and information services to the public in both Government Information and Archives & Special Collections.
  • Assists in the efficient overall operation of the Archives & Special Collections Department.
  • Coordinates and manages all public and technical services of the Government Information Department.
  • Provides leadership in identifying training needs and in developing training tools, such as online tutorials to facilitate the use of government resources in all formats and instructs Library patrons in the use of government bibliographic tools as requested by faculty or students.
  • Acquires document materials by direct correspondence with the issuing agency, by personal contacts with government officials and librarians, by monitoring government websites, and/or by purchase or exchange.
  • Catalogs materials in the Library's Integrated Library System (ILS).
  • Cooperates with the university administration, faculty, Library staff; GPO staff; and regional depositary staff to select relevant materials to meet the needs of the citizens of Southwest Louisiana.
  • Participates in professional development activities relating to librarianship in general, government information, and archives. Serves on various internal and external committees at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Organizes, maintains, processes, and develops the Government Information collection in all formats, including but not limited to the McNeese State University Library Government Information website, social media, and other information outlets with the approval of the Library administration.
  • Maintains records and statistics and prepares reports as needed.
  • Formulates Government Information Department policies and procedures.
  • Processes archival collections, including but not limited to arranging materials, writing finding aids, conducting research for accurate and useful descriptions, and performing routine preservation.
  • Performs routine maintenance, preservation, and cleaning of books, papers, photographs, and other documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with Library patrons and staff.
  • Proven ability to manage and oversee complex projects, meet deadlines, and to prioritize work in alignment with the service goals of the Library and the University.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends in library and government information services.
  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity to move around the Library and retrieve and carry materials from Library shelving and cabinets, including standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 35 lbs.), ability to work with keyboard, mouse, and monitor for extended periods of time; ability to travel to attend training workshops, meetings, and conferences.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required:

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, (MLS, MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Experience in an academic library.
  • A genuine customer service mindset and the desire to serve a diverse community of library users.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in an archives repository or government information department.
