Undergrad student wage position for less than 20 hours per week.
The Studio Art Program within the Department of Art seeks a qualified student to fill a temporary position within the Studio Art building as a Woodshop Safety Assistant. The woodshop assistant is required to have a basic understanding of hand and power tools, with at least one year of woodshop experience. The successful candidate must be able to perform basic woodshop tasks, pay attention to details, work independently, and demonstrate initiative and problem-solving skills. Duties include oversight in the wood and metal shops, training students on safe equipment use, and ensuring compliance with safety rules and regulations such as OSHA. Computer skills in Word and Excel are a plus. On-the-job training will be provided. Work-Study students are preferred but not required.
Position duties include but are not limited to:
- Keeping clay/plaster and meeting rooms clean
- Maintaining courtyard cleanliness
- Unplugging and storing extension cords
- Labeling secondary containers clearly (no abbreviations)
- Assisting with sculpture equipment maintenance
- Preparing sculpture materials and processes
Qualifications:
- Experience with hand tools and power tools required
- UVA Work-Study eligibility preferred
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work effectively with colleagues and the public
Anticipated Compensation: $15.00/hour
Anticipated Dates: August 26, 2025 - May 8, 2026

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position is primarily sedentary, involving extensive use of desktop computers. It may require occasional travel to attend meetings and programs.
