Job Description
Position Overview:
The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications supports the promotion, publicity, and
strategic communications efforts for the athletic department. This role assists in managing media relations, content creation, statistical services, and digital media for multiple sports programs, helping to enhance the visibility and reputation of the department, its teams, and student-athletes.
Primary Description:
Serve as the primary communications contact for assigned sports, providing coverage across traditional media, web, and digital platforms.
Develop engaging content for official athletic websites and social media channels to promote teams, athletes, and departmental initiatives.
Write, edit, and distribute press releases, game recaps, feature stories, and other communications materials.
Manage team statistics, records, and historical archives in compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional standards.
Assist with game-day media operations, including press box management, media seating, and statistical reporting.
Coordinate interviews, press conferences, and other media opportunities for coaches and student-athletes.
Collaborate with the marketing and video teams to ensure consistent brand messaging across all platforms.
Supervise and train student workers, interns, and game day staff.
Assist in maintaining relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.
Support special projects, events, and championship coverage as needed.
Position Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, sport management, or a related field.
1–3 years of experience in athletic communications, sports information, or media relations (graduate assistantship or internship experience acceptable).
Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
Strong knowledge of sports, statistics, and NCAA rules.
Proficiency with industry software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, StatCrew/NCAA Live Stats, Sidearm Sports (or similar CMS), and social media platforms.
Ability to work nights, weekends, and travel as required.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
Previous experience in a collegiate athletics setting.
Photography, video production, or graphic design skills.
