Job Summary
Portland magazine, University of Portland's award-winning alumni magazine, is looking to hire an editorial intern for the Fall 2025 semester.
This position is an opportunity for those interested in gaining valuable skills in the fields of narrative journalism, storytelling, and magazine editing.
The editorial intern will get an inside look at the creation of Portland magazine's content (both print and online).
The person in this position will have the opportunity to hone researching, reporting, interviewing, writing, and editing skills. The intern will also find opportunities to grow in an understanding of voice, narrative structure and craft, audience(s), and multi-channel story deployment strategy. The position reports to Jessica Murphy Moo, the Editor of Portland Magazine & Director Storytelling.
Application Requirements: Along with your application, please submit a portfolio consisting of three writing samples: news, profile, feature writing, or something you've written for a class. The hiring manager will send candidates a short proofreading test.

Core Duties
- Interviewing students, alumni, faculty, or staff for stories for Portland magazine's storytelling channels
- Organizing, researching, and writing the Class Notes/In Memoriam sections of the magazine, with a potential opportunity to write short alumni profiles
- Updating magazine archives and sending magazines and correspondence to readers and community members
- Proofreading
- Writing headlines, subheads, and social media posts
- Assisting with occasional in-person events, as schedules allow
- Other relevant duties as assigned
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofing skills
- A demonstrated curiosity about UP and an interest in covering a variety of stories
- Detail oriented, organized, and deadline focused, with an ability to work independently on assigned stories
- Must be comfortable interviewing people in many different situations
- Must have an openness to collaboration and feedback
- Interest in pursuing a career in the fields of journalism, storytelling or magazine editing
