Associate Editor, Automotive - Gear Patrol
Full-Time remote in NY, CA, WA, CT, NJ, OR.
Full-time contract opportunities are available to candidates living outside of these locations.
We're seeking a talented and ambitious full-time Associate Editor to join our editorial team. Associate Editors are integral to shaping Gear Patrol's editorial coverage on any given topic. We are seeking an editor who is knowledgeable and highly engaged about the automotive sector to cover news, explainers, buying guides, interviews, reports, and more. The ideal candidate should be extremely passionate about cars and automotive culture and naturally follow the trends and news happening within the global automotive community. Knowledge and experience with motorcycles and overlanding are also considered a plus.
Candidates should also be comfortable working in a highly fast-paced, digital-first environment that balances consistently publishing new stories daily, working on larger, longer lead projects, rapid communication with brands, and attending events. Like all Gear Patrol's editorial staff, Associate Editors will collaborate with our social, multimedia, and in-house studio when needed.
The role will report directly to the Executive Editor while working closely with other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Pitch and produce original automotive stories that help position Gear Patrol as a leading enthusiast voice in automotive culture and product journalism.
- Write and produce pitched and assigned automotive content.
- Help produce original photography, videos and audio segments as part of a multimedia approach to our automotive coverage.
- Meet regularly with the editorial team to coordinate content planning and production.
- Peer edit stories produced by other team members.
- Leverage content analytics and other data sources to help guide strategy and achieve audience growth goals.
- Continually monitor information resources such as competitive publications, PR contacts, and social media for new story ideas.
- Lead outreach for various editorial efforts, including outside expertise and product requests.
- Collaborate with the Gear Patrol Studios team and support production around marquee native advertising projects as needed.
- Serve as a company ambassador, attending press trips, trade shows, and topic-relevant PR events locally and abroad.
Requirements
- A passion for product and service journalism.
- A strong knowledge of grammar and writing fundamentals.
- At least 1 year of experience writing and reporting in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented editorial environment, ideally for an automotive or lifestyle publication.
- Must possess a keen interest and understanding of the automotive industry.
- Familiarity with social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, X, and Snapchat.
- Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and detail-oriented.
- Must work efficiently under pressure and take feedback constructively.
- Must apply a solutions-first approach to projects, responsibilities, and challenges.
- A willingness to travel and work odd hours as the assignment or news cycle dictates.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $50,000 to $70,000. Where an employee or prospective employee is paid within this range will depend on factors including the current/former employee's background, experience, duties, market and geographical considerations, tenure, and qualifications.
