  • Possession of a New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate.

Residency and Updates

REVISED 7/29/25: Submission deadline for the New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate has been extended to August 15, 2025 (Filing application deadline of last business day of July remains the same).

NOTE: The Village of Freeport has a special residence requirement which must be satisfied.

NOTE: CANDIDATES MUST HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF NASSAU COUNTY AND/OR SUFFOLK COUNTY AND/OR WESTCHESTER COUNTY AND/OR THE FIVE BOROUGHS OF NEW YORK CITY FOR AT LEAST TWELVE MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST AND MAINTAIN RESIDENCY UNTIL APPOINTMENT FROM THE ELIGIBLE LIST ESTABLISHED AS A RESULT OF THIS EXAMINATION. Instances where Nassau County residency is waived will be specified in detail in the Residency section of the examination announcement.

Application, Fee, and Waivers

FEE: NON-REFUNDABLE Processing Fee must be submitted for each separately numbered examination and must be paid by credit or debit card.

APPLICATION FEE WAIVER: A waiver of application fee may be allowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household or eligible for Medicaid, SSI, Public Assistance, or Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligibility; Active-duty military service members and military veterans are exempt. All claims for waiver are subject to verification. If eligible, select the Fee Waiver option when prompted to submit the application processing fee and follow directions to download and submit the required form.

HOW TO APPLY:
Online applications are available at www.nassaucivilservice.com. The advantages of filing electronically include the storage of submitted applications in your personal user account and application processing fee payment by credit/debit card.

Computers are available to file electronic applications at 40 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Hempstead, NY 11550, 9:00 AM to 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday. No hard copy application is available.

Subject of Examination

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION: There will be no written or oral test for this examination. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will receive a rating based upon an evaluation of your training and experience against the duties of the position being tested.

Applications must complete an online examination application and electronically submit it to the Nassau County Civil Service Commission.

  1. Applications received by the last business day in July will be reviewed in August. Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire, which will be available September 1, and approved candidates will be required to complete and submit this questionnaire between September 1 and midnight, September 30. Note: Passing candidates may be credited with training and experience gained up to the date the Training and Experience Questionnaire was submitted.
  2. Applications received by the last business day of January will be reviewed in February. Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire, which will be available March 1, and approved candidates will be required to complete and submit this questionnaire between March 1 and midnight, March 31. Note: Passing candidates may be credited with training and experience gained up to the date the Training and Experience Questionnaire was submitted.

Passing candidates will be added to the continuous recruitment eligible list by the end of June.

General Information

1. APPLYING: Inquiries should be directed to the Executive Director, Nassau County Civil Service Commission. The Commission does not accept responsibility for non-delivery or delivery delays of emails due to issues with your email account. The Commission reserves the right to reject for lateness or to accept applications filed after the advertised filing period.

2. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: The burden of establishing qualifications to the satisfaction of the Commission shall be upon the applicant. For the purpose of meeting the training and experience requirement of any examination, no credits shall be given for any work experience which is determined by the Commission to have been gained or acquired in violation of the provisions of the Civil Service Law.

4. ELIGIBLE LISTS, PLACEMENT, AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT TO CERTAIN POSITIONS: Vacancies: Eligible lists resulting from examinations may be limited to a sufficient number of passing candidates to fill vacancies. All eligible lists shall be established for four years unless otherwise determined. Special fingerprinting and clearance may be required for certain positions; residency and veteran credits may apply as described in the sections above.

5. RESIDENCY: To fulfill standard residency requirements, each candidate for open competitive examination must have been a bona fide resident and dweller of Nassau County for at least one year immediately preceding the advertised date of examination and maintain that residency until appointed; some appointing municipalities may establish local residency requirements.
