Description

The City of Norfolk is seeking a skilled and experienced Librarian II, Supervising Librarian, for the Downtown Branch at Slover. This position assists the Branch Manager at the Downtown Branch at Slover with library functions. Provides customer service to patrons, provides information, promotes general usage of facilities, and operates all library equipment. Plans and coordinates special projects as needed, including program, collection and personnel development.

The Slover is a premier destination located in downtown Norfolk that contains a branch of the Norfolk Public Library system, the Sargeant Memorial Collection Archives, the Roy E. Hendrix Business center, Creative Studios, Venue Rentals, and a Café. The Slover encompasses three centuries of architecture which spans 138,000 square feet across seven floors. The City of Norfolk is a permanent Carnival cruise hub welcoming 150,000 guests a year. At just two blocks from the hub, The Slover is a destination for visitation, information, and activities for tourists in addition to our robust visitation from residents.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Supervises employee recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and performance reviews.
  • Directs the operations of the library including customer service, reference and readers’ advisory services, circulation, public computing, use of databases and online digital materials for streaming and downloading, and collection development.
  • Reports directly to the Branch Manager for the Downtown Branch at Slover.
  • Monitors the branch library budget and oversees acquisitions of equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains policies and procedures and implements quality control standards.
  • Provides leadership and mentoring regarding staff development.
  • Coordinates facility maintenance, custodial services, and security services with The Slover Operations Department.
  • Promotes partnerships and collaboration between the library and the community through outreach and community engagement.
  • Coordinates programming efforts by working with other branches, volunteers, the Youth Services Department, Programming and Outreach Department, and the Multicultural Programming Committee.
  • Responsible for preparing various updates and reports as required by Library Administration.

Education/Experience

Work requires specialized knowledge in a professional or technical field. Work requires professional level of knowledge of a discipline which is acquired in a Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.

Two years experience as a professional Librarian or equivalent professional experience including management experience. Proficiency in Microsoft applications is required.

The preferred candidate will possess 3-5 years of prior library experience, previous experience in reference work, customer service, management, program planning and/or collection development.

Valid Driver’s License

Work Hours: Workdays and hours will vary depending on organizational needs. Staff typically work schedules anytime within the hours of 8:30 am – 7:00 pm Monday – Saturday. This position will require flexibility to work some rotating weekends and evening schedules
