Senior Piping Designer - Water/Wastewater Treatment

to join our Treatment Practice. This critical role supports the planning and design for a diverse range of water and wastewater treatment facilities by leading the production of detailed drawings, design packages, coordinating across disciplines, and supporting engineers. The ideal candidate will be a technical expert with strong leadership capabilities, passionate about leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance project delivery, efficiency, and quality within the AEC industry.

Responsibilities

Lead the strategic development, implementation, and enforcement of BIM/VDC standards, best practices, and workflows across multiple disciplines and projects.

Lead the development of design drawings for water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, pipelines, and related infrastructure.

Interpret engineering sketches and specifications to produce construction documents using AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Civil 3D.

Collaborate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to integrate designs, resolve conflicts, and execute project-specific BIM Execution Plans (BEPs).

Provide advanced technical support, troubleshooting, and training to project teams on various BIM software platforms, including Autodesk Revit, Civil 3D, and Navisworks.

Conduct comprehensive clash detection, coordination, and model quality control reviews to identify and resolve conflicts early in the design process.

Manage and develop BIM content libraries, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to company standards.

Manage drawing sets, file organization, and adherence to firm and client CAD/BIM standards.

Support the development of site layouts, piping schematics, equipment arrangements, and utility coordination.

Research, evaluate, and integrate new VDC technologies and methodologies (e.g., laser scanning, reality capture, drone data integration, VR/AR, generative design) to continuously improve project delivery.

Mentor junior designers and drafters, and provide technical guidance and support as needed, championing a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in design technology.

Participate in field investigations, site visits, and as-built documentation.

Stay current with evolving industry trends, software advancements, and regulatory requirements related to BIM and VDC.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of 8 years of experience in design/drafting for water/wastewater treatment projects in an A/E or consulting firm. At least 4 years of dedicated experience in BIM/VDC leadership, coordination, or management roles.

Associate degree or technical diploma in drafting, design technology, or a related field.

Technical Skills: Expert-level proficiency in Autodesk Revit, Civil 3D, and Plant 3D.

Familiarity with piping design, equipment layout, and structural coordination within treatment facilities.

Understanding of municipal water/wastewater design standards, construction methods, and material specifications.

Soft Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships; demonstrated project leadership capabilities, including delegation and team coordination; ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively; strong attention to detail, organization, and time management skills; ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and communicate clearly with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

Experience with scripting languages such as Dynamo, Python, or other programming tools for BIM automation.

Familiarity with other design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper).

Professional licensure or certification (e.g., AIA, PE, LEED AP).

Experience with data management and visualization tools.

Demonstrated experience in managing complex BIM models, performing clash detection, and facilitating coordination meetings for treatment process systems.

Knowledge of SCADA/controls layouts and integration with mechanical/electrical systems.
