Overview
The Marketing Director is the orchestra’s chief brand strategist and ambassador. This position leads the design and execution of marketing, communications, and community engagement programs that grow audiences, maximize ticket revenue, and create lasting connections within the community. The ideal candidate is an engaging, strategic storyteller and content creator, with a background in advertising who can craft compelling content, manage ticket sales campaigns, and represent the orchestra with creativity and professionalism. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
STRATEGIC MARKETING AND BRAND LEADERSHIP
Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that aligns with the MSO’s goals and elevates the orchestra’s community presence. Serve as brand ambassador, ensuring that all campaigns and communications reflect the orchestra’s mission, vision, and artistic excellence. Collaborate with the Development Director to design campaigns that highlight donor impact, sponsorship benefits, and community value. Collaborate with the Education Director to promote and raise awareness of all education programs, including the Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO). Ensure consistency of branding in all internal and external communications. CONTENT CREATION & COMMUNICATIONS
Lead creation of compelling written, visual, and multimedia content that strengthens the orchestra’s brand and deepens community engagement. Oversee design, production, and quality of all marketing and communications materials, including subscription brochures, digital and print ads, program books, press releases, newsletters, podcasts, social media, and website content. Develop and manage media relationships. Create a master calendar that outlines all campaigns and special events. Ensure consistent, high-quality messaging across all platforms and campaigns. Works with artistic staff to create effective programming and events. Maintains website and social media accounts. MARKETING MANAGEMENT AND TICKET SALES
Plan and execute subscription and renewal campaigns, including direct mail, telemarketing, and digital strategies; track progress and provide results analyses. Implement year-round single-ticket sales campaigns through advertising, promotions, and corporate/group sales initiatives. Oversee ticket office operations, supervising the Box Office Manager to ensure customer satisfaction, efficiency, and revenue accuracy. Develop pricing policies and recommend strategies to maximize ticket sales and audience access. Identify organizational and market trends and recommend strategies to respond to this information. AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Build strong connections with audiences through storytelling, events, and partnerships that increase participation and loyalty. Plan and coordinate special events, public relations activities, and subscriber engagement opportunities. Conduct and analyze audience research to inform targeted marketing and patron experience improvements. Attend concerts and events as a public-facing representative, stewarding media, VIPs, and community partners. Serve as staff liaison for the Audience Development and Community Engagement Committee of the board of directors. BUDGET AND PLANNING
Develop and manage marketing budgets, ensuring effective allocation of resources and ROI. Establish campaign and event calendars, coordinating across departments to align with institutional priorities. Provide regular marketing performance reports to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and staff. Work closely with the Executive Director and other staff in long range planning for the MSO. Prepare budget projections as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree, with an emphasis on marketing, communication, arts administration, or a similar field. Demonstrated success in strategic marketing, brand management, or communications, preferably in the performing arts or nonprofit sector. Working knowledge of PatronManager CRM is a plus. Experience leading subscription, single-ticket, and group sales campaigns. Strong leadership, budget management, and vendor negotiation skills. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public presentation abilities. Passion for music and commitment to the role of the arts in community life. Handles stressful situations with a pleasant demeanor. Able to prioritize and manage multiple activities and meet multiple deadlines. Proven ability to develop and monitor budgets. Excellent computer skills and comfort with spreadsheets, word processing, mail merge, and cloud based solutions Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud products and Wordpress for websites. Attendance at all MSO concerts is required. Evening and weekend hours are required as dictated by programs.
