The Baltimore Sun is seeking an entrepreneurial, audience‑savvy Senior Editor to help drive our emerging news coverage. This role guides reporting on traditional breaking news—such as crime, fires, accidents, sports, and weather—as well as timely, audience‑driven stories that reflect what our readers want and need to know. The ideal candidate will bring sharp news instincts, a strong sense of urgency, and sound editorial judgment to the role while guiding stories from conception to final edit, writing compelling headlines, optimizing for SEO, and ensuring our digital channels remain current and engaging. Responsibilities
Monitors emerging news, assigns edits, and produces daily and enterprise stories in varied formats Oversees direct reports, providing guidance and support to ensure strong, audience‑focused journalism with content that is fair, balanced, and compelling Curates and updates content on The Baltimore Sun’s website and apps to ensure timely, accurate coverage Manages audience engagement tools, including newsletters, email and desktop alerts, and posting to social media platforms Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform content decisions and engagement strategies Plans website and audience strategies for upcoming news events Assists with the editing of sports and community news content as needed Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience 5+ years of experience as an editor or producer (news publication and/or daily or weekly journalism experience strongly preferred) Prior managerial or supervisory experience required Strong knowledge of SEO best practices and digital content strategies Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately within a web‑based content management system This is a full‑time, in‑office role based at our Baltimore, MD headquarters, works shifts that may include nights and/or weekends Salary
Base pay range: $85,000.00/yr - $100,000.00/yr Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. Application Submission
