Overview The Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Music since 1900 (Historical Musicology). We seek a scholar whose work is theoretically and methodologically innovative and who engages critically with concepts of history and the archive. We welcome research focusing on music in global and transnational contexts, popular and vernacular music, music and technology, multimedia aesthetics and intermedial arts, modern and contemporary aesthetics and techniques, media and communication theory, and the music industry.

The successful candidate will join a department that studies music and sound as social, aesthetic, medial, and political phenomena that shape and reflect experience, with a commitment to inclusive curricula, creative pedagogy, and a supportive classroom environment.

The Department of Music maintains facilities including Hertz Concert Hall, the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library, the Center for New Music and Audio Technology, and Morrison Hall, and serves hundreds of students from multiple departments, alumni, and the public. We value scholars who have faced diverse career paths or personal responsibilities and encourage applications from candidates with non-traditional trajectories.

Position location: Berkeley, CA. Salary range: The current salary range for this position is $80,800-$128,700 (9-month academic year salary); off-scale pay components may be offered to meet competitive conditions. Anticipated start: July 1, 2026.

Basic qualifications

(required at time of application): PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.
