JOB SUMMARY:
Ackerman Consulting Group, LLC is seeking an experienced OSP Designer to join our Engineering team reporting to the Principal Engineer. Our team partners with rural and tribal internet service providers across the United States to deliver top-notch network engineering services.
As an OSP Designer, you will be responsible for planning, designing, documenting, and securing permits for new outside plant backbone networks, middle mile FTTx, Passive Optical Network (PON, G-PON, XGS-PON), Centralized and Distributed Split Architecture, and ongoing build-outs.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Independently conduct fielding tasks such as engineering design notetaking and pole data collection.
• Collect field data for various permits, including railroad and waterway crossings, and controlled access permits.
• Use field data to inform design decisions.
• Demonstrate knowledge of relevant building and design codes (NEC, NESC, etc.).
• Analyze jurisdiction documentation and field data to design within Right-Of-Way, considering environmental factors such as wetlands, floodplains, highlands, and pinelands.
• Show expertise in Telecom and Fiber - Outside Plant (OSP) design, including FTTx, MDU, wiring diagrams, splicing schematics, and equipment types.
• Design OSP routes and make simple modifications proficiently.
• Draft construction and permit drawings with minimal supervision.
• Design Fiber-Optic networks (FTTx) using ArcGIS software or client-designated software with minimal supervision.
• Oversee and review the production of specialized drawings, including Utility Company submittals, Railroads, Interstate crossings, and landmark designs.
• Determine the most efficient and cost-effective paths (aerial vs. underground) and construction methods (Bore, Plow, Trench, Micro-trench) for fiber optic cable.
• Conduct quality control reviews of Junior OSP Designer work products, ensuring constructability.
• Perform final quality control on permit packages before submission.
• Prepare technical correspondence and create Bills of Materials.
• Assist the Project Manager in preparing project proposals, including scope of work, fees, and schedules.
• Support the Project Manager with client management, including providing project status updates, submittals, and approvals.
• Participate in industry events and organizations as needed.
• Track project status, submittals, and approvals in coordination with the Project Manager.
• Assist the Project Manager in coordinating in-house professionals and sub-consultants to complete all aspects of project design.
• Maintain a basic understanding of project finances.
• Develop and maintain effective professional relationships.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• 5+ years' experience in linear utility engineering and design. Experience in fiber-optic/coaxial OSP is preferred but not required.
• Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, civil, or a related engineering field is preferred but not required.
• EIT license is preferred but not required.
• Proficiency in ArcGIS, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, or similar software packages with the ability to design projects through completion.
• Proficiency with Vetro and IQGeo is preferred.
• Knowledge of local city, county, state, and utility permitting regulations is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Valid driver's license is required.
