Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Public Relations/Social Media will work collaboratively and transparently with the Community and Media Relations Office (CMRO) Director and Vice President of Institutional Advancement (VPIA), senior leadership, faculty, and staff putting in place the systems, teams, and structures for Public Relations/Social Media team including planning and brainstorming ideas. At times, this may include collaboration with the VPIA and College President. The Assistant Director will serve in an assistant leadership role with overall responsibility as assigned by the CMRO Director and/or VPIA. The Assistant Director of Public Relations/Social Media is responsible for generating publicity and promoting the programs and objectives of Laredo College to all audiences.
The Assistant Director of Public Relations/Social Media will supervise the growth and development of the Public Relations/Social Media team and should be an inspirational team builder, embedding Public Relations/Social Media best practices within institutional values and aspirations, and will serve as an encouraging and collaborative leader and mentor.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
1. Works closely with the CMRO Director and VPIA to ensure the College's mission, slogan, branding and image, are seen in a positive way in all areas of media relations.
2. Develops and implements comprehensive public relations strategies and campaigns to promote the institution's brand, programs, and services.
3. Oversees the daily operations, sets objectives, and monitors performance of the Public Relations/Social Media team.
4. Supervises and assists the Social Media Specialist on management of the social media accounts of the Institution. Also, uploads photos and content into the social media channels of the college promoting student-centered institutional events/programs.
5. Creates and assists in executing promotional campaigns.
6. Develops media relations strategy, seeking high-level placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
7. Ensures brand consistency in all public relations and social media content.
8. Produces and creates news releases, media advisories, feature articles, tip sheets, PSAs, development materials and/or other written materials for distribution to the media and internal/external partners. Utilizes writing and editorial skills to prepare press releases, interactive newsletters, and other information for the media.
9. Produces and assists with the creation of talking points for the President, BOT, Executive team, and other administrators on specific college topics.
10. Supervises and assists with website content. Updates and uploads information and images to the institution's website.
11. Develops and maintains strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to generate positive media coverage and secure interviews and feature stories.
12. Gathers information, interviews people, and at times takes photographs for the production of the college's internal newsletter for our website and both internal and external distribution.
13. Supervises and assists with covering events that involve the president of the institution from a public relations, marketing, advertising, and social media perspective.
14. Assists with proofreading of all materials created by the department and works closely with the graphic design team to provide copy for graphic pieces and publications.
15. Stays up-to-date with industry trends, current events, and emerging issues that may impact the organization's reputation and recommend proactive strategies to address them, including professional development.
16. Leads collaboration with other departments and college stakeholders to develop and implement effective, high-impact social media and public relations campaigns.
17. Exercises judgement in prioritizing tasks that result in an efficient/effective team.
18. Works closely with the Public Information Officer and Compliance & Risk Management team to ensure that institutional crisis management/communication is properly handled and branded.
19. Works closely with the Development Office and supports with sharing photos, videos, written content, and other materials with external stakeholders, donors, alumni, and community partners to strengthen relationships.
20. Creates and manages calendar of events as well as public relations and social media campaigns.
21. Maintains record of media coverage (news clippings and news links).
22. Works closely with the IT Department in maintaining LC website's main page highlights, news section, and CMRO website as well as with providing photography, proofreading, and sharing analytics information.
23. Oversees, mentors, and strategizes with PR Specialist, Photographer/Public Relations Specialist, Social Media Specialist, department work-studies and additional team members to help ensure the highest level of effectiveness and efficiency.
24. Assists the CMRO Director and department leads with the development of marketing campaigns, recruitment programs, special events, and other events or programs that promote the institution.
25. Assists and supports the photographer and social media in the event hey are in need of additional help in taking photos for publications, advertising purposes, and event coverage.
26. Assists and supports in the creation of short videos to promote the institution.
27. Assigns projects and requests to Public Relations/Social Media team members and ensures timely completion of projects and requests.
28. Reviews every public relations and social media related projects to ensure that high-quality standards and branding guidelines are being implemented on every project.
29. Coordinates and manages the CMRO request form portal and ensures projects are completed in a timely fashion.
30. Performs other related duties as assigned by the CMRO Director and VPIA.

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:
- Bachelor's degree with major course work in English, Journalism, Communications, Business or related area with five or more years of experience in a position requiring extensive writing, computer desktop publishing, television production skills, photography and similar related skills or 10 years direct experience in the field.
- Five years of experience in a position requiring extensive writing, copy editing, news media, computer desktop publishing, photography, social media management or similar related skills.
- Must have a valid Driver's License and current car insurance to travel as required. In accordance with CJ (Local) while driving on College District business, employees are required to abide by all applicable laws, rules, regulations ordinances, policies, and procedures.
- Masters degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field.
- Previous experience in higher education.
- Experience working in public relations and communications.
- A professional disposition is required at all times.
- Bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred.
- Strong customer service and community relations skills.
- Ability to use personal computer and various word processing and spreadsheet software programs which includes MS Office Suite, Zoom, TEAMS, One Drive, Google Drive and the internet to promote efficiency.
- Must be able to multi-task.
- Requires the ability to adapt and work well under pressure.
- Must be able to exercise good judgment, maintain a positive attitude, and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Skill in the use of a computer for desktop publishing and word-processing required, along with strong oral and written communication skills.
- Technical ability in writing, editing, photography, and using web-based applications is required.
- Knowledge of current and emerging technology for the production of print and electronic communication is required.
- Must have vast knowledge in social media management.
- Must have basic knowledge in video editing, photography editing, and related content creation skills.
