The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role

Wirecutter is looking for a Lead Editor to help shape and steer our coverage of large cleaning and kitchen appliances and vacuums. You will work with the Writers on the Appliances team to make sure assignments stay on track, follow Wirecutter standards and processes, and reflect the information and news that is most relevant to our readers.

As lead editor, you will report directly to the team's Senior Editor. A deep interest in thoughtful service-driven journalism — as well as in large appliances and vacuums and how readers interact with them in their daily lives — is a must.

This is a hybrid role based in New York City, with an expectation to work in our Long Island City office.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the senior editor to develop the strategy for the Appliances beat, assign projects to staff writers, and write
  • Project manage guides, shortform articles, and other content with different writers ensuring stories uphold the editorial standards we’ve established
  • Collaborate with fact checkers, copy editors, and producers
  • Contribute original ideas to test planning, suggest creative reporting strategies, and challenge writers' assumptions
  • Keep current on the large appliances and vacuum beats, paying attention to industry news and trends
  • Use data to support potential story ideas and track performance; work with our SEO team, audience and discovery teams, and editorial managers to plan new content
  • Work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; our operations team on product orders and testing plans; our audience team to respond to reader feedback and questions; and our photo editors to coordinate photography plans
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of experience working at a media company,
  • 1+ years of experience editing writers
  • 2+ years of experience working with SEO from an editorial perspective and a sense of how to use web analytics data to help make editorial decisions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with service journalism and product reviews
  • 2+ years experience working with remote teams and collaborative software
  • Experience creating test plans for product evaluation
  • Experience collaborating with an art director and/or photo editor to present content and express complex ideas using visualizations such as charts, graphs, or infographics
  • Strong category knowledge, with the ability to discern what’s essential and what’s unnecessary in your beats; passion balanced by skepticism of marketing claims and unproven ideas
