As an independent, not-for-profit organization, L’Alliance New York’s mission is to provide our members and students with engaging French language classes and audacious multi-disciplinary programming that celebrates the diversity of francophone cultures and creativity around the world. L’Alliance New York is internationally known for offering the largest selection of fully-immersive French language courses for students aged one to 101, and for its renowned cultural programming including the annual Bastille Day celebration that takes place on New York's famed Madison Avenue, attracting over 50,000 visitors each year; the Crossing The Line arts and performance festival that engages NYC cultural institutions in bringing dynamic international artists to audiences; Animation First, the biggest animation festival in the U.S; and the Comic Arts Fest, celebrating the intersection of American and francophone comic arts.

L’Alliance New York is seeking a strategic, data-driven Director of Audience Development & Marketing to drive audience growth, deepen engagement, and ensure marketing efforts reach and convert target segments. Reporting to the VP of Marketing & Communications, this role combines high-level strategy with hands-on oversight of campaign execution and collaboration with cross-functional teams.


Key Responsibilities


Strategy & Planning



  • Partner with the VP of Marketing & Communications to develop and implement annual and seasonal marketing strategies that grow audiences, strengthen member retention, and drive earned revenue via ticket sales and language classes across education, cultural, and development initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the VP of Marketing & Communications and the Director of Public Relations & Editorial to develop and implement the marketing budget to support the organization at large

  • Identify and prioritize key audience segments, creating tailored campaigns to increase engagement and conversion.

  • Develop multi-channel campaigns that integrate email, social, website, advertising, and partnerships.

  • Leverage analytics, surveys, and ticketing data to guide strategy and refine messaging.

  • Work closely with the Senior Manager of Marketing Operations to track, analyze, and report on campaign performance, adjusting strategies to maximize ROI.


Audience Development & Campaign Execution



  • Oversee the creation, scheduling, and optimization of targeted owned and paid marketing campaigns across all platforms for diverse audience groups. This includes media planning (and buying, as necessary) across email, social media, digital advertising, SEO, print, mailings, OOH, event sponsorships, cross promotions, and merch.

  • Work closely with Programming, Language Center, and Development teams to align campaigns with institutional priorities and revenue goals.

  • Oversee and actively coordinate lead-generating digital ad campaigns for the Language Center and Cultural Programs, managing both direct efforts on Meta and initiatives executed through our agency partner.

  • Establish and nurture relationships with vendors, agencies, and key stakeholders in the NYC arts and education industries.

  • Attend events on evenings and weekends as needed for content capture, merch sales, and in support of general marketing functions.


Content Strategy & Management



  • Lead the organization’s content strategy to ensure brand voice consistency, high-quality storytelling, and audience-focused messaging across all platforms.

  • Manage the editorial calendar in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Marketing Operations and the Director of Public Relations & Editorial to ensure cohesive campaigns across all platforms.

  • Oversee production of high-impact and consistently excellent creative assets in partnership with the Design team.

  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Public Relations & Editorial to ensure messaging is highly effective and consistent.

  • Collaborate closely with the Senior Manager of Marketing Operations to develop and execute strategic email marketing campaigns in support of L’Alliance New York’s brand and programs.

  • Stay at the forefront of AI-driven marketing tools and trends, regularly evaluating opportunities to integrate them into content creation, campaign optimization, and audience engagement.

  • Manage the marketing budget for all paid advertising, ensuring funds are allocated effectively.


Box Office Strategy & Oversight



  • Oversee and support the Box Office Manager to ensure smooth day-to-day operations and high-quality customer service.

  • Develop and implement pricing strategies to maximize revenue while balancing accessibility and audience growth.

  • Monitor ticket sales and box office performance, working with the Box Office Manager to deliver regular financial reports and updates against revenue goals.

  • Collaborate with Programming and Finance teams to align ticketing strategies with organizational priorities and audience development objectives.

  • Analyze sales patterns and audience behavior to inform marketing campaigns, promotions, and dynamic pricing opportunities.


Team Leadership & Oversight



  • Supervise and mentor the Social Media Coordinator and other marketing team members, providing guidance, professional development, and performance feedback.

  • Foster a collaborative environment within the Marketing & Communications team

  • Communicate clearly, effectively, and collaboratively with the entire Marketing & Communications team and other departments to ensure marketing materials are executed efficiently, with minimal miscommunication or unnecessary revisions.


The person in this role will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by the role and the overall business objectives of L’Alliance New York.

Experience & Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field preferred.

  • 6–8 years of progressively responsible marketing experience, preferably in the NYC arts, cultural, or education sector.

  • Proven track record of audience development, segmentation, and multi-channel campaign management.

  • Extensive experience in a wide range of marketing strategies, including digital, email, social, print, and out-of-home (OOH).

  • Strong project management skills, with experience managing a complex marketing calendar with competing priorities.

  • Expertise in email marketing, social media strategy, and content creation best practices.

  • Proficient in analytics tools (Google Analytics, email reporting platforms, social insights).

  • Strong leadership skills with a clear communication style and proven experience managing and mentoring direct reports, including conflict resolution.

  • Exceptional copywriting and editing skills with a keen eye for style, branding, and detail.

  • Knowledge of emerging marketing technologies, including AI tools, with the ability to assess and recommend innovative applications for audience growth and engagement.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

  • Familiarity with email platforms, CMS, and collaborative tools (Google Workspace, Asana, WordPress, MailChimp, etc.).

  • Must be able to work on select evenings and weekends at L’Alliance New York events in Manhattan and Montclair, NJ.

  • Primary or bilingual fluency in English required; French language proficiency a strong plus.

  • Passion for French and francophone culture highly desirable.
