Responsibilities
- Meet classes and laboratories as assigned within the academic calendar.
- Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period, in accordance with the official course outline and District guidelines.
- For online and hybrid courses, maintain online course components and provide regular student–student and student–instructor contact.
- Develop and distribute a syllabus during the first week of class to communicate course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and requirements per District guidelines.
- Provide regular, timely feedback to students and return graded work promptly.
- Assign final grades in accordance with District policy, administrative procedures, California Education Code, and Title 5.
- Respect student rights as specified by District policy and applicable laws.
- Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials promptly and with consideration of cost to students.
- Refer students to tutoring and related services when appropriate.
- Supervise students in off-campus activities when required as part of a course component or load.
- Provide academic assistance during scheduled office hours.
- Participate in professional development to remain current in the discipline.
- Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, in a timely and accurate manner.
- Discipline-specific responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
- Continue to develop professional skills and stay current in subject matter knowledge.
- Keep and submit official records as required by District policy and procedures.
- Abide by District policies concerning District property and safety.
- Report absences due to illness or personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
- Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
- Fulfill all obligations established in the current collective bargaining agreement.
Other Activities (Encouraged)
- Schedule and communicate office hours; ensure availability to students and division staff.
- Participate in District governance processes and curricular activities, including curriculum review and program planning.
- Attend department and division meetings and participate in learning outcomes assessment and related processes.
- Engage in professional development activities that enhance pedagogy and student success.
Qualifications
Education Required
- Master’s in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communication, communication studies, speech communication or organizational communication.
- OR Bachelor’s in any of the above plus Master’s in drama/theater arts, mass communication or English.
- OR The Equivalent.
Experience Required
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, and of individuals with physical and/or learning disabilities.
