Overview
The Public Relations Specialist (PRS) is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with local media reporters, editors and producers as well as other local PIOs. Responds to media inquiries and proactively pitches healthcare content to the media. The PRS implements public relations strategies established by department leadership. Writes press releases and PSAs for health system, and collaborates with community organizations on joint releases for promotional partnerships. Acts as media liaison and spokesperson for feature articles or special events. Monitors news media coverage for relevant news stories and maintains retrieval system for both broadcast and print. Writes content for social media in collaboration with digital marketing team. The PRS coordinates system press conferences, VIP Patient Communications, and crisis media under the direction of leadership. Manages online reputation management platform and online review solicitation, monitoring and response. Posts internal communications on system Intranet. Facilitates third party interview or video requests by outside organizations PRS handles internal photography for events as needed. This position reports to the PR & Digital Communications Manager.
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, PR, Marketing or Mass Communications - Required
Experience
- 5 Years of experience in public relations or related field - Required
- Proficiency in all social media applications - Required
- Experience as a member of the news media or working with the news media is a plus. Must have strong writing and interpersonal skills.

Core Job Functions
- Manages communication between system and local, regional and national media outlets to include press conferences, press releases, public service announcements, pro-active and reactive media requests, including patient condition reports. Measures and analyzes news coverage.
- Cultivates relationships with community agencies and other PIOs for the purposes of advancing SJ/C PR plan. Reviews all printed and electronic media coverage on SJ/C or competitors and archives electronically as appropriate.
- Monitors reputation management platform, comments and coordinates response if indicated to online and social media reviews. Monitors internet alerts for content posted positively or negatively on SJ/C. Updates social media sites with new content as appropriate.
- Handles in-house photography for system events or internal publications as needed and coordinates video interviews for third parties.
