Custodian Position
The Custodian position located with the Nashville Public Library performs a variety of cleaning and service tasks to keep public grounds and buildings clean, orderly, and maintained. Performs related duties as required. Position may require weekend work. Employees in this position may be required to travel to various locations to perform assigned duties. Work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working under extreme outdoor weather conditions, working around moving parts, carts, or machines, irritant chemicals, etc. May be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields. Some physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, or similar activities required. We have job openings at the Main Library and Branch Services.
Typical duties include cleaning and maintaining public buildings, including stripping, waxing and buffing floors; sweeping and mopping halls, rooms, rest rooms, stairways, and other public areas; cleaning and maintaining all floors, carpets, furniture, and fixtures; washing windows, walls, blinds, rails, and air vents; performing minor building and fixture repairs; sanitizing, cleaning, and restocking rest rooms; removing all litter and debris from the ground; including emptying trash containers; salting and shoveling snow and ice; keeping outside area in good repair; preparing rooms for meetings and special events; checking for signs of break-ins or attempted break-ins and vandalism; and may move, load or unload heavy objects, supplies or other materials.
Minimum qualifications include eighth grade education and three years of general custodial or maintenance experience. License required: valid driver license may be required for some positions. Preferred experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities include experience with equipment, materials and methods used in custodial work; experience ordering and maintaining adequate supplies; skill in the use of cleaning and/or lawn care equipment; ability to follow oral and written instructions; bilingual language skills.
