ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It publishes 90+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals and other products and services for the global community. The Publishing Group includes seven main teams: Editorial Business Intelligence & Analytics; Global Editorial Operations; Global Production Operations; Strategic Partners, China; Publishing Platforms; C&EN; and Global Editorial Strategy. The Global Editorial Strategy team focuses on the effective operations and strategic development of ACS Publications journals, including both hybrid and open access titles. It delivers new products on an annual and ongoing basis, guides Editors-in-Chief to maximize impact, and ensures the Editors and editorial direction serve the mission of the ACS. Position Summary
The Assistant Managing Editor / Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day management of a portfolio of biological chemistry ACS journals. They will work with ACS staff and Editors to develop and implement publishing strategies and editorial initiatives to sustain and enhance the journals' standing within the global chemistry community and ensure their growth and success. Responsibilities include ensuring publications are produced on time, on budget, and with appropriate quality; collaborating with Editors on planning and recruiting commissioned content; monitoring journal performance relative to competitors; and working with ACS staff across Global Production Operations; Global Editorial Operations; Global Technology Solutions; Product Management; and Marketing and Sales to implement strategic initiatives. The Managing Editor will represent the journals within the scientific community through laboratory visits and conferences. The role reports to a Senior Associate Publisher, Global Editorial Strategy. Responsibilities
Define and drive strategic growth of this segment of the biological chemistry journal portfolio through development and management of editorial initiatives; monitor competitor journals and industry developments, and report on issues/trends to Editors and ACS staff; develop and implement near and long-term strategic plans and priorities. Identify, implement, and promote strategies for the assigned journals to grow authorship, personalize outreach to key communities, establish the role of the journals within the portfolio, and monitor emerging trends to identify opportunities for collaboration among related journals. Identify, build relationships with, and recruit new authors and research communities to commission high quality content (reviews, research articles, front matter, special issues); collaborate with Editors, ACS Publications staff, and other stakeholders to identify new areas of content and track submissions. Represent the journals in correspondence and at outreach events, site visits, strategic scientific conferences, and exhibits to understand and address community needs. Collaborate with Editors-in-Chief to identify and recruit new Editors and Editorial Advisory Board members. Monitor journal and competitor statistics, prepare data reports for internal and external reporting, and draft monitoring reports under guidance of ACS Publications staff. Coordinate with other departments to ensure efficiency, timeliness, and high quality of published products and advance strategic initiatives. Assist ACS Publication staff with developing and implementing features, products, and services for journals and the portfolio as necessary. Qualifications
A minimum of a master's degree in chemistry, biology, or allied sciences is required; Ph.D. preferred. Broad subject expertise in biological chemistry and related fields is advantageous. Combined 4+ years of relevant training and experience in an academic or industrial setting preferred. 1+ years of experience in STM or scholarly publishing is required for the Managing Editor position. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities with technical and nontechnical audiences; strong analytical, multitasking, and organizational skills; ability to build relationships and influence diverse stakeholders; ability to meet deadlines while collaborating with cross-functional teams. This position is based in Washington, DC, or Oxford, UK, with some travel. Hybrid work: onsite Tuesday and Wednesday; relocation assistance available where applicable. Compensation & Location
A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is: Washington, DC office: between $82,000 - $100,000 per year. Oxford, UK office: between 34,000-39,000 GBP per year. Location details and benefits are subject to applicable program terms. ACS provides benefits including paid leave, health insurance, retirement benefits, disability coverage, and more.
