JOB DESCRIPTION

Movement Labs is a movement incubator and the leading peer-to-peer text political consultancy supporting progressives and grassroots activists nationwide. We are dedicated to building durable electoral power by expanding voter participation, shifting partisanship of current voters, and turning non-voters into voters. Through scalable, data-driven strategies and innovative tactics—from grassroots organizing to digital engagement—we target key districts and states to secure federal power. We invest in pioneering new methods and piloting programs that will ultimately help us win the House in 2026 and the presidency in 2028. Beyond the major elections, we focus on securing critical rule-of-law positions to protect democracy, build a strong candidate bench, and safeguard the integrity of future elections. Movement Labs is a fast-paced environment, where we are laser-focused on testing and implementing strategies for resisting the worst of the Trump agenda. We work hard, and the environment evolves rapidly. We are adaptable, nimble, and shift quickly as needed to meet the moment. We are looking for candidates that thrive in this type of environment. As Director of Communications, you will lead a small but mighty team of communications professionals to shape, share, and sharpen Movement Labs’ voice in the progressive space. You’ll elevate our storytelling, strengthen our brand, and ensure our work is seen, understood, and valued by the audiences that matter most – from donors to movement partners to potential new staff members. If you can move between strategy and execution without missing a beat, know how to balance a consistent brand with fresh and responsive messaging, and thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes political environment, this role will give you the opportunity to drive impact at scale. We’re looking for an excellent writer, a thoughtful leader, and someone energized by landing the right message in the right place at the right time. Responsibilities

Communications Strategy & Execution (60%) Lead Movement Labs’ overall communications strategy, refining and sharing our message with priority audiences: current and prospective partners, clients, and donors

Oversee the overhaul and ongoing stewardship of Movement Labs’ website, brand identity, and visual presence

Steward Movement Labs’ website and brand identity, ensuring we present an authentic, consistent, and compelling public face to key audiences

Direct social media strategy to expand reach, engagement, and authority

Develop donor-facing materials, including pitch decks, proposals, and impact reports

Drive Movement Labs’ visibility at key conferences and events by securing speaking opportunities, preparing spokespeople, and developing materials

Develop and maintain an organizational communications guide; train staff to ensure a consistent voice across all channels

Build and maintain relationships across the ecosystem to share our model, ensure consistent messaging, and expand our reach

Program Marketing & Branding (30%) Ensure all Movement Labs programs (including Contest Every Race) are effectively branded and marketed to their target audiences

Create compelling storytelling assets that capture our impact and approach

Oversee development of digital and print collateral, videos, and other media

Coordinate strategic messaging for programs across social, email, webinars, events, and the website.

Use analytics to track engagement and refine strategies

Develop and implement strategies to make our mass mobilization work more public-facing, driving recruitment and ongoing engagement

Public Relations (10%) Lead earned media efforts for Movement Labs’ programs, securing targeted coverage in high-value outlets

Position the organization as a trusted thought leader on rigorous experimentation and a top choice for impact-focused donors

Train and prepare spokespeople to represent our mission to donors, partners, and the press

Monitor external coverage and social conversation to ensure a positive brand presence

Develop and maintain a crisis response plan to mitigate potential reputational risks

Qualifications

Our preferred candidate will have most of these qualities: Passion for Movement Labs’ mission and experience leading communications in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment where framing and precision are critical

Exceptional writing skills with a track record of producing high-quality written and visual materials

Experience developing and executing PR strategies, connecting newsworthy moments to the right prospects and landing impactful media coverage

Proven ability to manage, mentor, and grow a team

Comfort leading multiple projects with competing deadlines, delegating effectively while maintaining accountability

Proven ability to translate big-picture vision into tactical execution in a fast-paced environment

Excited by the opportunity to learn by doing; willing to dive into unfamiliar territory, experiment, and take action

Relentless drive to defeat the far right and elect Democrats up and down the ballot

Nice to have: Strong skills in graphic design and visual media

A clear creative point of view and design sensibility; experience with brand management

Experience as an organizer or working in politics – with campaigns, nonprofits, PACs, or vendors

Understanding of the progressive political communications landscape, including key players, reporters, and events

Benefits

Annual salary of $94,700-$113,400 as part of a transparent salary structure with clear levels of advancement, and geographic COLA increases depending on location.

Excellent health, dental, and vision benefits, 401(k) matching, and unlimited Paid Time Off.

This position is not eligible for the collective bargaining unit.

We’re looking for candidates with a wide range of skills and experience. If you’re excited about the job, even if you don’t match all the characteristics, we encourage you to apply. Applications submitted by September 3 will be given priority. The application process includes three rounds of interviews and a work sample submission. We hope candidates will start by early October.
