Library Information Specialist – Circulation, Part-time Late Night – University Libraries, 53493

Overview

This .40 FTE position works in the Circulation Services Department and reports to the SR Library Information Specialist Lead Evening/Weekend Supervisor. It is responsible for closing the library Saturday through Wednesday during the two academic semesters and Sunday through Wednesday during the eight-week summer session. The position provides circulation assistance and basic reference help and works shifts at the service desk. This position does not work between academic terms.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

  • Provides friendly, efficient assistance to patrons and resolves problems in the circulation unit that cannot be resolved at lower levels. Refers problems that cannot be resolved at the LIS level to a Circulation Services LIS SR or the Head of Circulation Services.
  • Regular shifts at the First Floor Service Desk including using the library ILS/check out system.
  • Oversees First Floor Service Desk functions and assists student assistants in providing services; communicates effectively with library patrons, supervisor, and other library staff.
  • With others, shares responsibility for retrieving items from open stacks and performing robot (Automated Storage Retrieval System) picks, as well as storing returned items in the robot including reading call number labels which may be upside down in the ASRS.
  • Shares responsibility for answering the main telephone line for Miller Nichols Library and directing calls as needed.
  • Answers basic reference questions and assists patrons with printing, scanning, and basic production software issues in the Information Commons; assists with issues like lifting paper reams and printer troubleshooting.
  • In the absence of the Sr LIS and SR LIS - Student supervisor, indirectly supervises Circulation Services Student Assistants, including assigning tasks and training on basic circulation functions; may assist with pushing carts of library materials up to 200 lbs and shelving materials.
  • Contributes to building security during scheduled shifts; coordinates with security and UMKC Police to maintain a safe environment and secures the building at closing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Professional development and service: participates on appropriate committees and maintains expertise in required skills.

Shift

This position is responsible for closing the library and the Circulation Services Department during the two academic semesters, with hours Sunday through Wednesday evenings and 20 hours per week for 17 weeks per semester. Fall semester: mid-August to mid-December; Spring semester: mid-January to mid-May. Also closes during the eight-week summer session, Sunday through Wednesday 6:00 PM – 10:15 PM (17 hours per week). Summer session runs early June to end of July. Position may be required to cover occasional other shifts in the absence of other employees. Not scheduled during weeks between semesters/sessions (e.g., December/January, May, August).

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience or equivalent knowledge and skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to two years’ experience in a library setting
  • Supervisory experience
  • Customer service experience

Compensation

Anticipated starting salary from $16.05 per hour to $17.50 per hour, commensurate with education and experience, in consideration with internal equity.
