*This is a civil service position. Selected candidates must pass a civil service exam and be appointed from the resulting list to gain permanent status.
Compensation: Salary Range: The current minimum salary for Heating and Air Conditioning Maintainer is $37.16 per hour for a 40-hour week increasing to $43.72 per hour in the sixth year of service. These rates are subject to change. Benefits include night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a medical plan and a pension plan.
Responsibilities
- Maintain, install, inspect, test, alter, and repair heating and air conditioning systems and equipment of MTA New York City Transit structures (shops, stations, buildings).
- Work on air conditioners and components (compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, motors, electrical and electronic controls and valves).
- Work on boilers, furnaces and components (boiler sections, heaters, radiators, piping, pumps, motors, electrical and electronic controls and valves).
- Perform soldering and brazing, keep records, write reports, and perform related work.
Physical activities and environmental conditions include: loading and driving light utility trucks; lifting up to 75 pounds; climbing ladders and working at heights; crouching to reach equipment; visual inspections; reading blueprints and schematics.
Education and Experience Requirements
You must meet one of the following:
- Successful completion of a four-year, full-time apprenticeship in the construction, repair and maintenance of air conditioning and/or heating systems recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor; or any apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor; or
- Three years of full-time journey-level experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of industrial, commercial, or domestic air conditioning units or heating systems, including electrical controls and wiring.
- Two years of journey-level experience as described in item 2, plus one of the following before obtaining journey-level experience: two years as a mechanic’s helper/apprentice/trainee; or graduation from a recognized trade school with 600 hours in a related field; or graduation from a vocational high school in related field; or an associate or higher degree in a related field.
If you have qualifying part-time experience, it will be credited on a prorated basis. The vocational/technical education must be approved by the appropriate state education department or accrediting organization. The college/university must be accredited by recognized agencies.

Requirements to be Appointed
Driver License: You must have a valid New York State driver license with no disqualifying restrictions for duties of this title; serious violations or suspensions may disqualify you. The license must be maintained for duration of employment.
Drug Screening: You must pass a drug screening to be appointed.
Residency: New York City residency is not required.
English Requirement: You must be able to understand and be understood in English to perform duties.
Proof of Identity: You must prove identity and right to work in the United States prior to employment.
Additional Information
Training: You may be required to undergo formal training during probation. Failure to complete training may result in termination.
Probationary Period: A probationary period applies; failure to complete it may result in termination.
