Overview


UC Berkeley Extension invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach online courses in UX Design, UI Design, and UX Research for the Arts and Humanities department. This is a pool-based approach for instructor positions (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track). The applicant pool remains in place for 9–12 months and is used as needs arise; it does not guarantee a position.


Position details



  • Position title: Instructor (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track)

  • Salary range: Compensation varies by course format. Synchronous Live Online: $1,500–$3,600 total per course. Asynchronous Fixed Date Online: $150–$170 per enrolled student; estimated $1,200–$3,400 total per course. Compensation may be shared among co-instructors and is determined by course length, units, enrollment, budget, and other factors.

  • Percent time: Part-time by agreement on a course-by-course basis.

  • Anticipated start: Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester.

  • Review timeline: Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the pool exists for 9–12 months; reapplication required to remain in the pool after the final closing date.

  • Position duration: Course lengths typically range from 6 to 12 weeks; further course agreements may be assigned based on program needs and funding.

  • Application window: Open date: August 27, 2025; Next review date: Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time; Final date: Friday, May 29, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Applications accepted until the final date, but late applications may be considered if the position has not been filled.


Position Description


UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX) is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. UNEX serves the professional and continuing education goals of thousands of people each year and contributes to UC Berkeley's mission to extend research and scholarship to a global community, increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online, and international students, and support workforce development.


UC Berkeley Extension invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach online courses for UX Design, UI Design, and UX Research in the Arts and Humanities department. Courses are offered online.



  • Online instruction may be asynchronous via Canvas or synchronous via Zoom.

  • Most synchronous live online courses are offered in the evenings and on weekends (Pacific Time).

General Duties


The department seeks candidates who support student success through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary depending on instruction method (synchronous live online or asynchronous fixed-date online).



  • For synchronous instruction: syllabus development, assignment design, lesson planning, updating Canvas course site, delivering lectures and activities for required hours.

  • For asynchronous instruction: reviewing syllabus and pre-populated content, using Canvas classroom management tools, and coordinating with the Program/Department Director for training needs.

  • For all instruction: completing mandated trainings, responding to student questions, grading and posting final grades, using Canvas/Zoom/Google Workspace, following policies and guidelines, and coordinating with the Program/Department Director as needed.

Qualifications


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree required.


Additional Qualifications (required at time of start)



  • 5 or more years of professional industry work experience since degree, or 5 or more years of teaching experience since degree.

  • U.S.A. Residency and U.S.A. Work Authorization: All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. For applicants who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a valid US work authorization is required for the duration of employment. Applicants should not expect the department to sponsor a work visa on their behalf.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Advanced degree in UX Design.

  • 5+ years of professional industry work experience in UX design, AI, voice design, web design or development, product design, graphic design, interaction design, HCI, ergonomics, CS, engineering, cognitive science, psychology, anthropology, or sociology.

  • Experience in User Research Methods (quantitative/qualitative).

  • Proficiency in design thinking methodologies and user-centered design.

  • Proficiency in design tools (Figma, InVision, Miro, Mural, UXPin, or AI tools).

  • Proficiency in AR/MR/VR.

  • Proficiency in VUI design tools (Voiceflow, Alexa Skills Kit, etc.).

  • Experience writing technical content and project specs.

  • Knowledge of AI integration with user experience design.

  • Teaching/training/coaching experience in UX subjects in US settings.

  • Experience creating syllabi, objectives, lectures, learning activities, assessments, and exams.

  • Experience teaching online and/or developing online courses.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to collaborate in a team.

  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn instructional tech (Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, MS Office, Google Workspace, etc.).
