Job Description
Harvard Business School seeks a Research Associate (RA) to support faculty members with writing-focused work. This may include case studies, articles, book projects, and similar writing tasks. Some faculty hires are part-time (20 hours/week) with potential to pair roles for a full-time (40 hours/week) appointment. The RA reports to faculty supervisors and the administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. Ideal candidates will have independence, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to use discretionary judgment.
Primary Duties
- Work under the general direction of HBS faculty on topics central to the research agenda. Provide subject-area knowledge, analysis and interpretation. Identify and explore questions related to the faculty’s research agenda.
- Write cases, case supplements, project reports, policy memos, and articles for relevant business audiences (e.g., Harvard Business Review) from start to finish.
- Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Work with general direction and be aware of relevant policies.
- Under general direction of a faculty member, translate complex research ideas into new projects and applications. Structure assignments and keep faculty informed as necessary, using own judgment.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Additional Qualifications: Candidates with significant advanced experience may be considered at a higher salary grade (56).
Excellent Microsoft Office skills. Evidence of academic excellence. Demonstrated independent research and high-quality original academic writing. Ability to read academic material and produce reasoned, thoughtful analysis and creative interpretation. High standards for quality, attention to detail, organization, and task completion. Ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a dynamic environment. Familiarity with navigating a complex organization such as Harvard Business School is helpful.
Work Format & Schedule
This is a hybrid position with on-site requirements in Boston, MA. StandardHours: 40 hours per week. The campus requires on-site presence a minimum of 3 days per week. Specific hours and days are subject to change with advance notice. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Pre-employment screening includes education and identity checks.
Appointment & Terms
Appointment End Date: June 30, 2026. Term appointments start Summer/Early Fall 2025 through June 30, 2026, with potential reappointment through June 30, 2027 based on funding and performance. All RA roles are structured as one-year appointments, with a preference for multi-year commitments.
