Gardener - Container & Interior Design Support

— Red Butte Garden. This part-time gardener role supports the Container and Interior Designer with plant display maintenance and general greenhouse care. Primary duties include creating and maintaining high-quality displays across the garden's public spaces and event venues, day-to-day operations such as watering, plant detailing, and general plant care. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to work independently or as part of a team. We value commitment to the Botanical Garden’s role in the community.
Responsibilities
Provide excellent plant care within greenhouses and seasonal display areas.
Maintain plant health through proper watering, weeding, detailing, and general greenhouse upkeep; include transplanting, deadheading, pruning, and basic propagation.
Hand water plants daily with attention to moisture levels.
Assist with installation, rotation, and upkeep of interior and container plant displays.
Monitor plant health in assigned spaces and report issues to horticulture staff.
Support greenhouse team priorities, including preventative maintenance, integrated pest management, and production goals.
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of greenhouse facilities; operate soil mixer; work from ladders; assist with outdoor tasks; greet garden guests as a steward of the Garden.
Minimum Qualifications
Nine months of professional work experience with responsibility for five or more acres of grounds, or equivalency (one year of education can substitute for two years of related work experience).
Valid Utah vehicle operator's license.
Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
Selected applicant will be expected to obtain a pesticide applicator's license.
Preferred Qualifications
A passion for gardening and plants; prior experience in landscaping, horticulture, plant displays, floral arrangements, or design work is strongly preferred.
Basic knowledge of horticulture, gardening, or botany, and a desire to learn more.
Ability to work effectively individually and in teams; cooperative with a variety of people.
At least 18 years of age; valid driver’s license; proof of insurability; ability to safely operate equipment.
Ability to perform all physical tasks essential to the position and work safely in all climatic conditions.
Strong problem-solving, listening, analysis, creativity, communication, and teamwork skills.
Position Details
Employment type: Part-time
Work schedule: Up to 19 hours/week; shifts primarily during daytime hours (8:00 am – 4:30 pm); occasional evenings and/or weekends may be required; schedule coordinated with supervisor.
Department: 00340 - Red Butte Garden & Arboretum
Location: Campus
Pay Rate: $16.00 per hour or more, depending on experience
