As a member of the project leadership team, the Design Manager (DM) is responsible for the timely development of the project design and its alignment with the project execution plan. The project execution plan includes client expectations, scope of work packaging, delivery methods, cost budget, sequence of work, quality expectations, and planned schedule. The DM establishes and manages processes on their projects to build and maintain alignment between the design and these project objectives. The DM’s key interface starts with the designers themselves at the outset of the project.

Key Responsibilities

Work with the pursuit leader to lead and manage successful competitive Design-Build, and heavy Design-Assist pursuits (jobs where we are hired before 50% DD and participate by informing the design).

Facilitate and advise design team selections and teaming agreement negotiations.

Review and validate A/E scopes and support fair fee negotiations that benefit DPR and A/E team.

Promote the use of GPLA as SEOR, leverage delegated engineering, modeling, and detailing to support SPW and Prefab with preferred details and standard work practices.

Facilitate integration of Self-Perform Work (SPW), Digital Building Components (DBC), Prefabrication, DPR Technical Design Services, EIG, SurePods and Vueops into the design and fabrication model where value is added.

Identify opportunities for prefabrication, self-performed work, and modularization to deliver more project value while enabling integration into design and fabrication.

Foster open, honest, and trusting relationships within the design team.

Support or organize High Performing Team (HPT) project workshops to create an aligned Vision, Mission, Charter and KPI’s.

Organize cluster group formation strategies during design and project workshops. Align and sustain the OAEC team in delivering a Design Execution Plan that streamlines design and preconstruction processes.

Use design scope risk knowledge to develop mitigation plans for design-related project risk.

Evaluate the project for needed design scope and develop a strategy to integrate all stakeholder design responsibilities into a complete design scope.

Understand and use the Owner’s business case and steer the design to meet client expectations.

Actively engage and coordinate with the DPR team to ensure alignment on key responsibilities in support of the design process.

Encourage value-enhancing design iteration and drive timely design resolution that supports the project budget, plan, and client expectations.

Identify gaps between the basis of design and evolving scope creep with mitigation capability.

Manage Program and Concept Design Validation to budget prior to schematic design production.

Collaborate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction to establish the design package permit submittal review process.

Lead and facilitate Milestone Alignment Planning (MAP) workshops to align design production with construction needs, including non-traditional fast-track packages.

Schedule and lead Design Quality & Constructability Reviews and track closure into project risk mitigation.

Set up and manage the internal DPR bulletin review process for design drawings/changes up to IFC and post-IFC bulletins.

Develop and manage a design change decision-making and change management process with client cost and schedule awareness.

Implement DPR’s Design Acceptance Criteria (DAC) within the QC plan for all design packages and related deliverables.

Qualifications

Proven experience in CMAR, Design/Build and IPD in the design and construction phases.

Architectural / Design or technical background in managing the design coordination process.

In-depth knowledge of construction project aspects including design coordination, permitting, and model coordination, and the shop drawing process.

Strong knowledge of BIM software (AutoCAD, Autodesk Building Design Suite, Revit, Navisworks, Tekla Structures) and related platforms.

Excellent communication and people management skills; ability to influence contractual differences and risk management.

Ability to travel to jobsites or design team offices as required.

Experience providing constructability and cost feedback to the design team and performing estimating and quantity takeoffs.

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent.

Minimum 4–6 years in project engineering/management roles in CM, general contracting, or architectural firms.

Lean construction scheduling knowledge (Last Planner, Pull planning, Critical Path).

Anticipated Starting Pay Range $106,734.00 - $182,972.00
